That's because Harbaugh hired Don Brown for the gaudy defensive stats his teams put up. Those defenses work in conferences like the Big East or at FCS schools, not in P5 conferences. Once UM got rid of Dr. Blitz and got a real DC, things changed.

Harbaugh's record against ranked teams as a whole has been ghastly. Even in his best season they choked away a late lead in a loss to their in-state rival and were blown out in their bowl game. He's just not a big game coach.
