No because the value of paying these guys a year early so to speak as they have done with Earl, Kam and now Richard is nearly priceless. It keeps them focused on football not money and creates a culture where guys know if they perform, they will get paid. This leads to a locker room focused on winning, not contract deals.

You could also look at it on the opposite side, Sherman would be on a contract year this year and would have more incentive to play hard. For some guys, not saying Sherman is one of them, a contract year gives you more incentive than having been locked up with 40 million guaranteed.

IMHO our #25 is a competitor, it's one of his best attributes. He plays the way he does because of this.
Obviously the money is a great benefit.
I personally don't believe it's his main motivator.
His grades in school are proof enough for me, that he is a winner.
IMO he would be at the top of whatever he chose to do.
I don't think for even one minute, that he played hard last year because of any impending contract. He played hard because it's how he's built.

JS/PC Do a great job of seeing this in prospects. #25 ain't the first, and won't be the last.

But by then he would be free to sign with any team he wants. You can always use the franchise tag, but that is typically seen as an insult. Better to lock him up now which creates good will in the locker room that the best players will be rewarded. You would also need to deal with another year of inflation escalating the contracts as the salary cap rises to a current projection of 150 million in 2016.

Also makes sense to pay him and Earl right now so we can focus on Wilson next year.

JS already said they wanted to get these two done first so they could focus on Wilson next, by himself.

I also have to giggle at the doubters and naysayers. It's crazy to me when people talk like this front office doesn't know what they're doing. They've proven themselves the best in the NFL, which is manned entirely by guys who have dedicated their entire lives to running an NFL team and knowing the ins and outs of the business.

But yeah, some Joe Schmoe on the interwebs totally knows how to do it better. Lol

PFT has a bit of a contract breakdown.

Funny reading the PFT articles and then the comments, every hater = "cap hell'' comments. They're wishing for that sooooo hard.

Yeah I've been enjoying the hate. Greatest sign of respect possible.

Even better was reading the hate from Matheiu. LOL. Go win something and you can talk, little man.

Sherman is the best of all time. And everyone knows it. And they can't stand that he says it.

Sherman’s cap number for 2014 will be $3.631MM, tweets Joel Corry of CBSSports.com. It’ll jump to $12.2MM in 2015, $14.769MM in ’16, $13.631MM in ’17, and $13.2MM in ’18.
YES!

This is EXACTLY the kind of contract layout I love to see. Not heavily back-loaded; we won't have to cut him in his final year. SWEET.

Excellent news!

And so glad that that bitterly fought, knock-down drag-out back-and-forth, contentious contract hold-out is finally overwith...

Wait... what?? You mean that's not what happened?

Im definitely excited to see what all the deals do for motivation for the rest of the team. Play your ass off and the seahawks will give you what you earned! Congrats to Sherman! Anybody heard any word on the injury he got in the SB? Just curious if itll be any thing that might linger into the season.

I trust it Pete and John but over 14 mil a year is pretty high. I know a lot of you are counting it as 5 years, but he was already signed for this year at the 1.x mil number so it seems a little odd to me to include that to make the number lower when he was going to play this next year at that number with the extension or not. I love Sherman, but the hawks may have been better off letting him play out this year and then sign him. A lot can happen in a year. With that said... I can hear Crabtree crying from here :)

And having to change his diaper too.

Full Sherman deal would be 5 years, $58.831M -- an average of more than $11M, easily tops for any multiyear deal.
That looks very team friendly even without the exact terms.

With the future salary cap projections, absolutely.
What???? according to he webzone tardfarm the Hawks are screwed capwize for the next 10 years... SMH...
Those troglodytes fail to realize increases to the cap, restructuring of contracts, and contracts ending.....

Hope springs eternal for those clowns, I guess.

Oh well, get Douglas Baldwin done and I'll be the happiest hawks fan around.

Several things stuck out while I was watching the presser.

1) The atmosphere here in Seattle - the fans, the coaching staff, the fellow players, the competitive environment - played a rather large role in Richard Sherman wanting to stay a Seahawk. It was very obvious the whole time that he gave tremendous value to it. John Schneider's remarks when talking about how they considered "breaking from their strategy" and getting some other big name players to sign here also spoke to that some. The environment here is very special right now, and it is going a long way toward keeping us competitive in the league.

2) They really didn't want to talk about the details of the contract, and in fact pushed that question off, saying they'd address it sometime later, which might indicate it's a little more unique than we're used to seeing. To me, that might signal a bit more money up front, or a deal that is cap friendlier than we're used to seeing. Someone with more knowledge on salaries and cap space and what money counts and doesn't count could address this better than I, but it sure sounds like they set it up to be team-friendly well into the future. This is very good for us.

3) Sherman was treated very similarly to how Wilson was in the draft. He was rated much higher by the front office, but they waited until the fifth round because they were fairly certain he'd fall that far. I get the feeling he wasn't as much of a known entity then, and so they weren't as obviously worried about not getting him as they were about Wilson, but it was much the same situation. And I get the feeling a lot of guys are every year for them. It's just how they do the draft.

4) The front office's strategy for creating and maintaining a championship caliber team is a plan they're sticking to very tightly. All of these major contracts were well anticipated, and were well a part of this plan for quite some time. That tells us that when Wilson is due his fat payday next year, it'll happen about the same way. They have the core in place right now to compete indefinitely, and that is simply amazing as a Seahawks fan.

5) The Legion of Boom between '12 and '18 is poised to become one of the greatest, most legendary units in football. The major components are young, healthy, and signed long term. Better still, they love it here, and their "always compete" mantra shows no signs of letting up. Quite astounding, if you think about it, to consider that 40 or 50 years from now, the Legion of Boom will be part of NFL lore as one of the all-time greats ever to take the field.

Man, it's good to be a Twelve!
Great points Sailor! :th2thumbs:
Been telling my friends and fellow Hawks fans for years that Pete and John KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!
They are 3 to 4 steps ahead of the other teams in the NFL, and are aware of, and plan for future pitfalls.

You should read the webzone, according to most of those goofballs we just screwed up our future cap, and the ONLY reason Sherman is any good is because of Thomas and Kamtrak. Lots of wishful thinking at that sewer of a website.

Now Nike has to get their crap together and make a wolf grey limited #25, which I've been waiting for over a year and a half!
