Firstly, the Seahawks aren't trading for Jones.

Secondly, that's not how the Salary Cap works. Year 1 cap hits on mega contracts are extremely low.

Dre'Mont Jone's 1st year hit is 10M, you think a player asking for an average annual salary of 30M is going to cost less than the entirety of the rest of our 2023 cap space right now?

No, "extremely low" is all relative and depends on your cap space. None of this makes any sense for the Hawks.

And Hargrave signed 4 yrs $80M with the Niners. More than Dre Jones, $20M a year. His first year cap hit is only $6.5M.

Point being, cap reasons are not why the Seahawks are not going to pursue Chris Jones as you can always fit them in. High compensation, and getting burned repeatedly by these splash trades in the past is.

"You can always fit them in" is a fiscally irresponsible way to manage a cap. Eventually that leads to cap hell and a complete tear down of a franchise. So yes, cap reasons are a big concern because if they aren't, they'll bite you.

Perhaps you still have a man-crush on Golden Tate. Yes, he was fun to watch, and we ALL loved that block on Sean Lee, but it's time to move on.
???? I never had a man crush on Golden Tate, ever.
Good player, play maker. But I kind of thought he was a dick at times.
It's called Sarcasm. Geezus man, this place.............

Sorry dude, it's irresponsible GM'ing to say cap isn't a concern with a player who wants 30M a year. Just because it's not THIS year doesn't mean you don't take the cap into consideration.

Look at what Adams is doing to our cap right now, soaking up 20M a year on a broken safety.

The Rams gave everyone a false sense of kicking the cap can down the road is a viable way to build your roster with a bunch of high priced free agents.

A bit tense there man, didn't intend to set you off, just a very mild tease, reminiscing about Golden Tate and his running-back like skills. Haven't actually looked at Tate's YAC numbers, but don't feel a need to, I'm sure they're good to great.

Absolutely Tate was a hothead dick at times when with the Hawks. The "Bye bye!" play vs the Rams stands out as one example. KJ Wright had a great interview with Tate on a recent episode of his podcast, but then of course, all KJ's podcasts are terrific.

Oh I know. He was a trip. He would make an incredible play, then just vanish for a few games.
The waving play against the Rams was ridiculous. Sure, it's the Rams, but go score the damn TD first. And our offense did little to nothing in that game. Including Tate.

Yes, as I pointed out if a team values a player, they can fit him in. Jamal Adams is a $20M a year safety but won't count $20M+ against the cap until 2024--his 5th year on the team, when the Seahawks will be likely cutting him.

If the Seahawks valued Chris Jones they would go get him, give a fat signing bonus to keep his cap hits down for the first couple of years of the contract and go from there.

But past trades such as the Adams trade have burned them good. That is why they won't be pursuing him. NOT because they can't afford to fit him into the cap, the Seahawks don't want to give up the assets it would take to acquire him. They value those more than Chris Jones, simple.
