Q: What changed from the preseason?
A: “Sure, it can happen. It can certainly happen sometimes. I wouldn’t necessarily say stage fright, again it’s just that everything doesn’t always go as planned and as perfect as you would want it to go. But that’s what we’re pursuing, it’s our ultimate goal is to make sure, it’s our pursuit of that perfection. But ultimately, again a simple fact is if we get lined up we’ll have a chance to execute.”
Q: What allows Richard Sherman to play inside?
A: “He’s a technician, you know and it’s nothing that he hasn’t always been able to do. It’s just he’s done whatever we’ve asked him to do, and for this defense here in order for us to be our best, again we needed him sitting right there hunkered down at the left corner position. So he’s always been able to do whatever we need him to do out there, and for the most part we needed him to be at left corner.”
Q: Why Sherman was playing at nickel corner?
A: “Well right now, it’s just trying to get the best guys out there, ultimately is what it comes down to, and we want to get the best guys out there, the best guys that give us a chance to be successful.”
Q: How valuable it is to have the option of moving Sherman to nickel?
A: “Absolutely, it’s absolutely valuable. Again, it’s the old adage right, the more you can do, and he’s able to do a lot. And so are a lot of the other guys, but we felt as though that was going to be the best matchup for our football team to have success was to put him in the slot and neutralize one of their better players.”
Q: Has Richard's confidence in the defense improved? “
A: Absolutely, absolutely, again we know who we are ultimately when it comes down to it, and we know we have good players. And really that becomes my responsibility, is to make sure that we put the guys in all the right spots in order for us to be successful. So I’m making sure that I’m going to lock in and get our guys in the right places.”
Q: Did Richard feel the need to talk to Dion Bailey after the game last week?
A: “Yeah, it was absolutely necessary, and that’s part of being a coach. Ultimately, there are going to be some times, there are going to be some days like that, and for the most part if you’ve been out there and you’ve played long enough, you’ve been in that position both ways in some form or fashion. So obviously the big deal is not whether or not it happened, or you get knocked down, it’s how we respond. That’s 90 percent of life right there is how we respond to it. Ten percent is what happened, 90 percent is how we respond.”
Q: What happened on the Rams play action plays?
A: “Well a lot of the times it’s my call, and ultimately putting the guys in the right position. So again we had some pressures and things of that nature to where it wasn’t as beneficial for us to be in. So some issues to where we need to go in there and fix some things to be able to protect ourselves in case we get those certain route combinations again. But ultimately again, it’s just putting us in the right call.”
Q: Is there is anything Richard can do to ease Dion Bailey’s transition?
A: “Right now we have to do what we have to do, and the ease of it all is really just going to come along with the experience. That’s where the ease is going to come, is with the experience of him just being out there, him getting comfortable with who he is, and how we do it.”
Q: How is preparing for Aaron Rodgers different since the NFC Championship?
A: “Well it’s the fact that he can scramble and he can move, and even then. Even then, he was still active in the pocket with his calf. So we know very well that this guy can move around in the pocket and really we liken him to our quarterback in the fact that he can move and create and extend the play. So we know we’re going to have to do our best to keep him bottled up and cover on the back end.”
Q: Did the pass rush succeed in generating pressure against St. Louis?
A: “Absolutely, absolutely. So that’s really the big picture, can we affect the quarterback. You know again, yes we do want to get him on the ground. But ultimately, can we move that quarterback off the spot and affect him. So again, it was very active, a lot of pressure, and really it’s our job on the back end to make sure we cover tight.”
Q: Is Frank Clark’s role in the game last week what Ricard expected?
A: “Yes, yes it was. Yes it was.”
Q: Does Clark still have a situational role?
A: “Yes.”
Q: Will that role change as Clark learns?
A: “It’s just where he’s going to be for right now. Ultimately, he will be called upon when needed, and then we absolutely look to him to come in and perform.”
