What kind of compensatory picks are we looking at?

Here is an interesting question regarding McDonald:

Brian Nemhauser ‏@hawkblogger · 54m
Was looking at the NFL compensatory picks formula, and it says "player that were picked up during the season do not qualify." McDonald?

Keith Myers ‏@MyersNFL · 48m
@hawkblogger that is correct. McDonald cannot provide a comp pick for the Seahawks.

With Browner's suspension, assuming he gets a low salary and a relatively high signing bonus (because he'll lose 8 game checks I think) will that factor into the comp pick? ... or the low salary will mean the comp pick is negated?

If we only get 4 picks, I wouldn't think Browner's salary (whatever it may be) is high enough to count.

So far, MAYBE one sixth round pick for Golden Tate. I don't think there is another player signed away that would give the Seahawks another compensatory pick.

So if each FA that we sign cancels out one FA that we lose, how do FA's that we re-sign count? Does it cancel a lost FA when we re-sign one of our own FA's?

Anybody know if untendered RFA's count into the equation? What about and RFA that is tendered and not stolen away (like DB or Jeron)?

Browner just got a big contract that I imagine would give us at least a 5th rounder. We are definitely getting some comp picks next year. Fairly high picks as well unless they surprise everyone and sign a big contract but I highly doubt that happens.

The answer to this question is still far from being known as it depends on so many factors, but it is clear we will get a few picks in next year's draft without a doubt

1. Only UFAs count.
2. Resigned UFAs do not count against lost UFAs.

We'll max out at 4 picks. Probably have one or two of our higher ones cancelled out by signing a couple mid-level FAs or our own, which will then be replaced by 7ths.

Something like:

5, 7, 7, 7 or 6, 6, 7, 7.

Best we can hope for if no one significant is signed is probably something like 4, 5, 5, 7 (but more likely 5, 6, 6, 7).

Yeah, he got got about double what I expected him to get.

Here are my very early predictions for anyone that is interested. This of course will almost certainly change every time a new free agent is signed, and throughout the season. The dollar figure at the end represents the total value of the contract signed by the new team.

3rd Round Compensation:
Branden Albert - Kansas City - $46.00m
Michael Johnson - Cincinnati - $43.75m

4th Round Compensation:
Arthur Jones - Baltimore - $33.00m
Golden Tate - Seattle - $31.25m
Anthony Collins - Cincinnati - $30.00m

5th Round Compensation:
Jason Hatcher - Dallas - $27.50m
Mike Mitchell - Carolina - $25.00m
Tyson Jackson - Kansas City - $25.00m
Jon Asamoah - Kansas City - $22.50m

6th Round Compensation:
Breno Giacomini - Seattle - $18.00m
Brandon Browner - Seattle - $17.00m
Geoff Schwartz - Kansas City - $16.80m
Corey Graham - Baltimore - $16.00m
Earl Mitchell - Houston - $16.00m
Emmanuel Sanders - Pittsburgh - $15.00m
Evan Dietrich-Smith - Green Bay - $14.25m
Captain Munnerlyn - Carolina - $11.25m
Brandon LaFell - Carolina - $11.00m

7th Round Compensation:
Ted Ginn - Carolina - $9.75m
Michael Oher - Baltimore - $9.50m
Antonio Smith - Houston - $9.00m
Ben Tate - Houston - $7.00m
Chris Maragos - Seattle - $4.00m

So the Hawks are currently looking at a 4th, 2 6ths, & a 7th. Not bad.

You should be ranking them by avg. yearly salary, as opposed to total contract value.

Yeah. From what I understand playing time is a factor as well into the equation.

Playing time and poat season awarss play minor roles, probably bumoing borderline round guys into the next hiher compensation tier, but salary is the overwhelimg determinant.

And yes, III will count, but as we can only have 4 picks at most, he may be knocked out.

I agree. The top 4 qualifiers would be . . .

Golden Tate
Brandon Browner
Breno Giacomini
Walter Thurmond

How are our comp picks looking for next year?

Even if we sign Allen, can we still get 4 picks?

Off the top of my head

Tate, Thurmond, Browner, Giacomini, McDonald, Maragos, McQuistan?

And Schofield still out there in FA.

Assuming Allen cancels out one 4th, we'd get one 4th (Browner/Tate), a 5th (Giacomini) and two 6th rounders (Thurmond/McDonald)
