about the QB. Relax, Russell is doing pretty good and Pete's strategy is similar to what other coaches have had success with in the NFL. Similar but I do believe Pete needs to loosen the reins just a little bit, let Russell throw and audible it a little more. Hopefully he will at the beginning of the 2nd quarter of the 2012 season.
So, I went through QB stats for 1st and 2nd year QBs and they are fairly close to Russell's.
I went with the 2nd year if they had minimal to no starts in their 1st year.
Next to their total yards for the year, I put the average per game in parenthesis.
For Christian Ponder I added in this year because he has made a marked improvement.
Notice the yards per game, average yards per pass play, and completion percentage compared to Russell's.
Looking at a very successful team with one of the best defenses over the last 5-10 years, their QB, Ben has averaged ~3375 yards per year which is 210 per game. This seems counter intuitive, but that impression comes from the occasional bomb that Ben throws, hence his 8.0 ypa. The 3 years that they made the Superbowl, they averaged under 200 yards per game.
My point? You don't need to throw for a lot of yards every game to go deep in the playoffs unless your defense is mediocre.
