Okay - I've been down on the pass rush all year, waiting for the sack-festival that I thought never came. I expected to hear some porno-fantasy of Clark and Williams and Jones - like a machine gun - sack sack sack sack. I've even posted the "Wellllll..... we're waiting" comment a couple of times.

And then, we're tied for MOST sacks in the NFC, and ranked 6th best in the league. Heard it on the radio yesterday, and article here today....

Huh, who'da thunk. Maybe it was the 3 night games I caught like a grand total of 30 minutes of watching time ;) In the background, they're quietly getting it done, and spreading them around!

While I believe fans here are far more negative and critical of the team than they deserve, those stats are tilted by a single game against Giants with 11 sacks, which means in the other 14 games we've averaged around 2.4 sacks per game, which would put us in the bottom third of the league. Granted every team will always have 1 or 2 games which tilt the stats in their favour, but that is one in particular which has an outsized impact.

Being sixth in sacks despite the DL looking like an absolute dumpster fire going into the year is fantastic. Amazing work by Jarran Reed, especially, who has played like a top-5 1T. Dre'Mont has disappointed but honestly, since he's been playing outside more, he's been a load too. Mario Edwards has been more than serviceable, and Leonard Williams has been a wrecking ball.

This is why it sucks that it feels like we kind of have to get rid of Hurtt, because this is what he does! He elevates a DL significantly when that's what he's focused on doing - and it feels like since Pete pulled back on the Fangio stuff, he's been able to focus on it more.

If he gets fired, I wish him well as a perennially good DL coach.

Always nice to have someone come around and show us the dark lining to the silver cloud I guess.

If you're going to throw out the Giants game, you might as well toss the Titans game as well. We had 6 sacks there.

Sacks come in bunches. It's the nature of the game. You have a game or two like that and the next teams up change their protection schemes to counter and it drops for a couple of games until you figure out ways to counter that. Hell, many football stats are like that. Any time you do well at something the other guys work on slowing you down.

Yeah could do that too, that means 17 sacks in 2 games and 28 in 14 yuck! But I agree sacks come in bunches so not worth taking them all off, but I'd say 6 sacks in a game is a good output and lots of teams manage that occasionally. 11 sacks comes along in the league once a decade or so!

I think a couple of games gratly inflates things and if a team is game planning against us they're not worried about our pass rush. Doesn't mean it isnt a pleasant surprise overall but still an area we wish we had more consistancy in.

Total pressures would be a better barometer of a team's ability to rush but I'm not sure that is even a stat that is recorded.

It probably is - and I found it here:

We've got 45 sacks on 145 pressures. Trying to figure out how we rank - but rankings for this stat are elusive -

Because no other team has tilted stats?

Khalil Mack had 6 sacks in one game against the Raiders, I believe.

The pass rush has had poor showings in games this year. They certainly did well against Tennessee, for whatever that's worth. I think the longer Williams practices and plays with this group, the better it's going to get.

I think that's what' Pete's pretty much been saying with Williams lately - mentioned it on the radio yesterday
