Hope so. Not gonna' lie, the run defense still makes me very nervous.

Me too @SoulfishHawk

What makes me more nervous is the number of weekly "I told ya so" threads if our interior D line struggles and Carter dominates in Philly. The ancillary benefit potentially being fewer Russell Wilson threads to dissect.

"Back" seems like a stretch.

A LOT of new faces on this defense, on every level. So while I'm hopeful that some of these new guys and depth players can get the defense back to a respectable level? I'm gonna need to see it before taking as big of a leap of faith as King.

Improved is what I'm hoping to see first. Might take a bit, but IF they don't improve quite a bit on run defense, they are going to have a rough time keeping teams off the field. And looking at TOP in those losses, it was a massive factor.

Until they fix the interior line and shore up the LB Corp this defense will struggle

I think they did shore up the LB corp with bringing Bobby back. Beyond that can Brooks come back and regain his form AND can Devin Bush be an affective compliment to Bobby on the interior?

Not sure on #2, but #1 will greatly help shore up the interior run defense. Bobby should be able to get everyone on the same page and in the right gaps and fits.

King is a complete idiot and one of the biggest hack journalists in the modern era. I hope this is one of the proverbial nuts he finds.

King is rambling more like a grandpa about coffee, beer and pretentiousness, but I like his in depth interviews on his main subjects.

Bobby Wagner and Bush definitely isn't enough. We don't have depth nor speed. Once again I'm gonna harp on why we drafted Charbonnet when Trenton Simpson was there for the taking. Huge swing and a miss

Bush and Brooks are two of the fastest LB's in the league.............when healthy.

I know that's a big disclaimer, but if we're discussing generalizations, you're most definitely right on depth, but speed? Those two dudes are very fast.

But yes, this LB corp is one major injury from Rhattigan or Burr Kirven starting. That should give every Hawk fan the cold sweats.

I don't buy into the "Legion of Boom redux" narrative. A decade later , this is a very different era in which the nickle has replaced base defenses as the more frequently deployed personnel group. IMHO, the secondary also emphasizes versatility over specialists. Different era and different personnel skills make up.

A more interesting tidbit from the article .........

"Geno Smith is a lean machine. Smith became a pescatarian last spring. “I haven’t had chicken or beef in four or five months now,” he told me. “I’ve been eating really healthy, really clean.”" ---- This is interesting. My assumption is that it's the diet that the VMAC dieticians continue to recommend. "Pescatarian" --- similar to my diet with the exception of a meal of iron rich liver and onions the day before my Red Cross blood donations. Although, my liver consumption is probably coming to an end given that oysters and mussels are close in iron richness and canned sardines are not all that far behind ..... bon appétit.

You may want to look at where Trenton Simpson is currently on the Ravens depth chart before you get too far out over your skis here. Simpson is a project with upside who will struggle to contribute much on the field this year. Jack Campbell was the only LB from this class who looked ready to make an immediate impact and the Lions took him off the board in the mid first.

If we're going to pine over LB depth then Ivan Pace Jr is a better target for jealousy. The Vikings landed him as a UDFA due to size and injury concerns despite him being a 4th-6th prospect on most boards. Thus far, he's been healthy and one of their best preseason stories.

We haven't been good on defense in years so I will believe it when I see it. Every year I get excited and think this is the year it changes but it hasn't so forgive me for my skepticism. I hope they prove me wrong though

Last year the defense sucked big time. There will be 5-6 new starters on defense. Now I’m no mathematician, but that’s half of the defensive starters as new. One of those starters is a returning starter in Bobby Wagner. While the defense wasn’t good in his last year in Seattle, it was clearly worse without Bobby. His presence alone will help tremendously.
If the defense is as bad or worse than last year, then it’s clearly on Hurtt. The replacement starters are better than the guys they replaced. The defense will be better. How much is to be determined.
