He will be back after week one where he will he under a different set of contractual/cap rules

I can agree with that as opposed to him being completely off the team.

Do people actually think he deserves a spot on the team or do they just like the story?

He's one of our top in Special Teams as of last year. He's ALMOST comparable to Neiko Thorpe in terms of speed and Special Teams, who has been on our roster since 2016.

There will be a lot of sifting and rotation on that PS this year, they are setting up the stacking and we can have if I remember the other thread 6 vets on it, which he would be one I am thinking.

Note to OP. When you refer to one of the Griffin bros, "Shaq" is insufficient. They're both "Shaq." Need to specify Quill or Queem. ;)

Queem is a perfect candidate for the new PS rules where you can put a veteran on the PS. Chances are he'll clear waivers since he hasn't had a lot of exposure around the league.

Queem was not a "top" special teams player. Not a leader in special teams tackles and also not great at taking correct angles. That is why they cut him instead of BBK. BBK is solid on special teams. He could be in the mode of a Heath Farlow. BBK can also actually play the linebacker position in a pinch. Griffen could not play linebacker well. Also too light for DE. I often wondered if Strong Safety would have been his best position but that is a moot point with our stacked secondary.

He is an exceptional gunner and gets there fast cutting off angles.

Actually, Shaquem goes by Shaq, Shaquill goes by Quill.

Good story but not good enough to play at this level.

Wrong. Not enough playing time to really show anything. Special teams and situation isnt much.

Not enough playing time because he isnt good enough to get it. He will always be nothing more than a good special teams player no matter where he goes.

He was a feel good story but eventually reality kicks in.

He did not get enough playing time and/or the scheme that he can fit in.
The size is an issue and it makes him a tough fit but some team out there
can use him.

Maybe he wasn't getting the playing time because he wasn't good enough to play at the NFL level?

This. Funny how the logic about the player not getting playing time only seems to apply to certain players

I was going to be livid at this cut if he did not make the practice squad.

If they put him on that special COVID practice squad for vets, then OK.

Last year we struggled to rush the passer. That was WITH Clowney. It is going to be worse this year.

Griffin is pretty poor against the run. So what? He gets pressure against the QB when we bother to use him. (Run stopping is overrated when you aren't playing the 49ers, Cowboys, or Titans anyway.)

What I do know is that on a 3rd and long, when you put your nickle in on obvious passing downs - he should have been used to rush the passer.

Pass rushing is tremendously valuable in a league where every advantage goes to the QB. The benefits of passing far outweigh the benefits of running the ball. So pressuring the QB is paramount as even mediocre QBs can carve you up with enough time.

He made the practice squad.

We are going to need him to rush the passer this year. Not until the playoffs, which we likely make regardless, but unless a 53 year old Irvin and hopefully improved Mayowa make that much difference - we are going to need Griffin. Unless there was some magical transformation in the DL that we never saw because no preseason, our DL is going to suck at pass rushing.

He isn't Jason Taylor or even close. But he is good enough to get pressure we won't get without him.

IMHO, he played fairly well at DE, but Pete was too conservative with his players last year and didn't give Shaq enough reps to get the position down.

Other players he did not put on the field enough: Ugo Amadi, Marquise Blair, Cody Barton.

Man you are going to sound real dumb when the seahawks realize where he should be playing.

I don't think this has come as a surprise to either twin.

I am sure he will be an asset to whatever organization he ends up at, be it football or not.

Well this will be year number three, so is this going to happen anytime soon? Tell you what, just let me know when it does happen.

I always think its the player's family when they make weird emotional pleas like that

There wasn't a natural roster spot for Quem. When he was brought in on plays he acted with speed but he simply is pretty small--when McGlinchey on the niners got injured Quem got by him, but with non injured they just kind of toss him.

In a system with stouter defense than what we had in 2019 (and poss 2020) the speed alone could work. And they signed him to PS so that's another year Quem can work on it, and the Hawks themselves on the defense in general.

From b/r The Seattle Seahawks re-signed linebacker Shaquem Griffin to their practice squad Sunday, which comes one day after the team released him. Griffin went unclaimed on waivers, setting up a return to the team.https://bleacherreport.com/articles/290 ... d-contract

No, it is Pete's nonsensical obsession with stopping the run in a league where being great at stopping the run hardly matters.

Also, Quem is not great at covering the TE. But that should be fine, since he should be rushing the QB.

You can be great at stopping the run and it hardly helps you if you cannot stop the pass. We were #26 against the pass last year and not exceptional in getting pressure. With Quem we got pressure, not every time, but enough to help and when he didn't get pressure when used, someone else did.

Is it worth it to waste a roster spot on a player that only would be playing on passing downs?

Look at all the freaking 3rd longs our opponents converted last year. Of course it is. 3rd and longs not converted become punts or they become FGs instead of TDs.

Instead, repeatedly last year, I saw him out in space covering a TE. Because our DC is a moron. (Honestly, less a moron than just below average in every way)

We will see if when we struggle to get pressure on the QB this year we bother to use him. Not optimistic but you never know.
