Just going to admit it — I've been aware of the title Passing Game Coordinator for a few seasons now, but have no idea what it actually means (especially when compared to Peetz' previous title of Pass Game Specialist). I'm going to look it up now, but in the meantime, if someone wants to explain what this coordinator is responsible for, please feel free to weigh in. My guess is there are other fans who aren't completely educated on exactly what role this person plays on an NFL football team.

Here's one sort of explanation. Other stuff I've read it's pretty much a glorified WR coach who helps the offensive coordinator put together a gameplan based on the strength of the WRs, which he has more familiarity with

This is the guy they will groom once Grubb gets taken for doing a great job. It’s a smart hire and allows for some continuity internally.

Around the league, it's mostly an "implementation" role. They're helping craft the ins-and-outs of the game plan and route tree, and then tightening the on-field product in the passing game by coaching the details.

Not calling plays, but helping craft the plays on the whiteboard and then transferring them to the field.

Right.

I don't find anything wrong with a lot of these more "specialty" roles that coordinators have. Other than being an extra head that can help devise plans/develop players, it's become more of a stepping stone to larger positions on coaching staffs.

A lot of discussion about what a pass game coordinator is....

Is pass game coordinator above or below position coach? (actual question)

If it's above it might just be a way to hire laterally (like another qb coach? Hire him a step up as pass coordinator, want to protect yours? Promote him to pass coordinator).

That's just a wild broad guess, different coaching staffs operate differently.

Last year pats didn't have a defensive coordinator.... Not because bill took over HC/DC, he didn't even call defensive plays.

The olb coach did, and come time to hire new HC, ILB coach took over instead. Come time to hire new DC, the DL jumped ahead of the play caller.

That olb coach is future huskies legend destined to surpass dad Steve belicheck.

Stupid drunk roundabout way of saying that different staffs have different responsibilities, probably has something to do with passing through.
