No such thing as a sure thing or a perfect pick. The draft is a crap shoot, period.
I get your point to some degree, but ultimately disagree. I don't intend to be offensive, but isn't such a comment just lazy thinking? You know better. Sure, there are risks in every investment, but to say this then exclaim "period" seems more like fatalism. If the brass thought this way, I'd be done with football.
Again, no offense intended. I know you contribute greatly here on .net
This just inevitably gets mentioned year after year and it finally bothered me enough to speak up. ✌ Peace brethren.

If there isn't a guy you feel strongly about in round 2 the rest of your picks are like tossing pennies into a fountain. Trade your picks for vets you do feel strongly about and look for some new scouts.

And we've had plenty of years where you find yourself saying "WHO?"
Not me. Part of the fun of the draft is collecting Intel and sifting through what's said about various prospects. Makes the draft a lot more enjoyable. But, I'm a draft nerd. 😎

There is definitely a higher hit rate the higher the draft pick but it is by no means assured.
Trading down makes sense in some situations and not in others.
This year at our spot I think it could make some sense. I also think it could make sense to move up in the second or third to get the guy they want. Possibly they could do both.
Been a while since JS has traded down.

I can see us having a #1 pick some day…only for it to cut to a Jake from State Farm commercial with Mahomes in it.

Obviously, reconvening on the 2nd pick as Dallas is up.

I get it, but many of these discussions went off into tangents off topic like saying that we’re gonna go into commercial break and we’ll trade the pick down without the member ever mentioning who they thought we would pick with our first pick. No big deal.
To give you a complement... you actually started a great thread that, yes, veered off at times but was direct enough that the original intent was there. It's a true skill to have the ability to ask great open ended questions that will include facilitating discussion. I thank you for that contribution.

Now, if you're actually incognito JS trying to figure this thing out...

It's not about the number of selections in each round or even round that the player is taken. JS has explained each team puts a 1st round, 2nd, etc grade on each prospect they're interested to draft. There might be only 17 guys they have a first round grade on. That's definitely a major consideration when looking to trade... either up or down.

Great comment and needed to be said. I don't agree that the draft is just a crapshoot. If so, just throw darts at a board with hidden names assigned to the numbers. No, that's not it at all. Try to make informed decisions. Sometimes take a chance. But, there's also wisdom in getting more picks, more UDFA's. You never know when you might land a Doug Baldwin.
I've always hated that expression, personally. The draft is absolutely not a crapshoot. If it was a crapshoot, we wouldnt consistently see the hit rate of higher-drafted players dwarf the rate of each subsequent round. Loading up on mid-late round picks isn't playing the odds the way some think it is.

If you go to the fan forums of other teams, every single one of them complain that the networks always go to commercial during their picks.

I think the networks just play a lot of commercials.

Probably. It's truly not a big deal, more just funny how often it seems to happen when the Hawks pick.
And yes, much of the draft is a crap shoot. How a guy plays in college often doesn't come close to how he plays in the NFL.

The draft is an educated guess from people who have invested massive amounts of time and resources into it. More failures than successes. As long as you have enough success you keep your job

The draft is very hard, it's not a crapshoot. If it was a crapshoot, basically every franchise and GM would have a similar success rate. Ozzie Newsome and Ron Wolf didn't hit on pick after pick because they were luckier than everyone else. There's a lot that goes into it, and smart teams are better at playing the board, mitigating risk, and taking chances at the right times.

Idk man. I think we have a stronger case. I live in Florida. There's an inordinate amount of times they go to break when Seahawks are on the clock. I've watched the draft with fans of other teams and I say watch this... about to go to commercial. Sure enough.
