Will this be the most boring offseason ever?

With little cap space and poor draft choices it seems like this place will be quiet. A new OC will be interesting but for those of us that think PC will force peteball on any new assistant the OC position isn’t that important.

Yawn.

It might be, and it might be league wide. With the cap actually dropping for the first time, a lot of teams will probably have to dial back what they can do. On one side, it might help us re-sign some of our own FAs that we want to keep. I kind of expect some weird deals...more one year deals to see how things change post-covid and perhaps some long term deals with creative bonus packages.

Good point. The new OC hiring will probably be the highlight of the offseason (or lowlight depending on who they get). As the days drag on, I’m afraid we’ll have to settle for someone who’s not widely regarded as a great choice or innovator.

Probably one of the most entertaining. The Seahawks will enter the league year about 10 million over the cap, we're going to have to clear players and restructure. Some teams like the Saints or 120 million over the cap. Most teams are 40 to 50 million over the cap. We have to expect big names to be moved around a restructured Schneider has a lot of work to do

With little to no cap growth, there is going to be a lot of player movement with short contracts.

They can create about $45M in cap room for 2021 if they're able to agree on some extensions.

Projected Cap Gains from extensions:

Carlos Dunlap $10,020,000
Tyler Lockett $8,968,000
Duane Brown $7,420,000
Jamal Adams $7,096,000
Quandre Diggs $3,568,000
Brandon Shell $1,668,000
Jarran Reed $6,068,000
Tre Flowers $1,010,400

If you think this is boring take a peek at the Mariners off-season so far.

This 100%.

There looks to be a lot of good players on the market as teams look to restructure and get under the cap. Hopefully JS can work some magic.

Where are you getting your numbers? Based on projections from overthecap.com, the Seahawks will have a measly $2.7M in cap space. That's middle of the pack. Obviously not enough to get anything done, but they aren't over the 2021 cap as of right now. 13 teams are already over the limit. The Saints have the worst situation in the league and are projected to be $103M over. This is based on a $176M cap.

Every Seahawks off season is boring, John and Pete say nothing all off season they give overtures of thoughts about things.

They bring a lot of people in for work outs and interviews but we always are hanging to see if they offer and sign.

As we sit Whole coaching staffs have been turned over and we are still waiting to see who the OC will be. Many of the staffs filled hired guys we had looked at.

What we will see is guys that played for us get signed else where and go oh guess we didn't make an offer only to find we did but there was no news.

Then the draft happens and everyone is happy, maybe not this year with limited picks but that can change.

We get 4 weeks of are they Nuts about the picks discussion.

Then silence again till right before camp when we start back filling 90 players with Jag's for practice.

2 weeks before camps is when we start to see the flurry happen all at once to find they had a hand shake thing going on till the last minute.

I doubt it be the most boring ever! At present the team is in a negative cap position according to OTC.com and that is going to make roster manipulation essential.

If the cap does drop $13.2 million for the season FA will be 'interesting indeed' as some teams are simply forced to offload some talented players. Many big deals with be re-jigged and or slightly extended while salary gets converted to bonus money that is guaranteed.

There will be lots of intrigue and fake news as well along with more than few surprise changes and trades.

Things could get quite interesting.

In terms of space Seattle is middle of the pack. Most teams are dealing with a salary crunch.

The market is about to be flooded with guys you can get for pennies on the dollar.

As mentioned above, Seattle has a lot of guys they can extend, thus lowering their current cap number creating space.

I can't imagine JS is comfortable with only 4 picks going into the draft, either. Some trades will be made.

It will be the opposite of boring.

We have the knack for somehow paying through the nose for free agents that you would pay to get rid of.

Eddie Lacey, Greg Olsen are some examples. Cary Williams is another. The list is actually long. The only big splash FA I think can of that actually seems to be working out for us is Adams. Most of the time it ends badly for us.

The good news is that hopefully we will be so cap constrained we cannot spend big on a mediocre to worse FA.

If we can just get through the offseason without spending big on a couple of veterans that there was no reason to expect anything from? Yay.

That said, I am hoping against hope we can somehow keep Carlos. He might be getting long in the tooth a bit, but he is still a monster on the field.

Big splash FAs almost never work out for anybody. The winner's curse explains this pretty well.

The average bid is likely to be the best estimate of a player's value, but they will of course sign instead with the maximum bidder. The maximum bidder will overpay by the difference between the two on average.

The more uncertainty there is, the bigger the difference and the resulting overpay for expensive FAs. That explains why it is such a pronounced effect in sports free agency where the players can be evaluated very differently by a small number of teams.

It should be somewhat exciting watching them try to duct-tape an O-line together again . That's always fun . :snack:
