Spacing with the space bar usually doesn't work. You need a place holder and the period usually works best, so you would get this:

If I'm the Seahawks I offer Bennett a 4 year $30 million dollar contract with about $14 million guaranteed, and I structure it so that there is at least $6 million against the cap this season. I'm thinking $7.5M signing bonus. Would look like this:

Year...............Base...............Bonus...........Cap Hit............Dead Money............Cut Savings

2014..............3.500.(G).........2.625.............6.125.............14.000...................-7.875
2015..............5.200..............2.625.............7.825...............7.875...................-0.050
2016..............4.500..............2.625.............7.125...............5.25......................1.875
2017..............6.300..............2.625.............8.925...............2.625.....................6.300

Essentially means we can't cut him for two years, and he wouldn't count more than $8M against the cap until the final year of the deal (and if we did decide to cut him then we'd re-gain $6.3 million on the cap, with only $2.625 million in dead money). He averages $7.5M per year, and even if he only plays out the first two years of the deal would make $19.2 million, or more than $9.5 million per year.

EDIT: When I first wrote this post all the numbers were spaced out nicely and it was much easier to read. Sorry about this, but not sure how to prevent the jumbling you see above.

Thoughts?

Is there a difference between how guarenteed and Unguarenteed contract money affects the cap?

You made my point without even knowing it. Out of the 3, Clem is the only one who stays on the field for all 3 downs. He's capable of holding the edge on run plays and has the speed to sack the QB. And he got paid.

Avril is a good rusher, yet he still hasn't proven himself as a run stopper because he's used exclusively as a rusher. But he has a much greater upside because of his speed. He ran a 4.51 forty on the combine, so did Irvin. That's freaky. Faster then Clowney. Yes, he turned down a 3 yr 30Mil extension, for the 2 yr 13Mil, but the market dried up because, as you said, he's unproven as a run stopper.

MB is not an every down player. Not in this system. He's a specialist, just like Big Red and look at what happened to him.

You mentioned PC has the ability to maximize a players skills and put him in position to succeed. Well, what makes you think he can't find a quick 6-3/6-4 275/285 ibs DE and use him as a pass rushing DT?

I want MB on the team. Bu to use a different analogy, we're not going to get him for Fiat prices, but he's no Mercedes either.

I think Bennett is 100% about the money. I tried to listen to all his interviews and radio appearances this year, and he would bring up money all the time.

1. Bennett was rotational because we had Clemons, but Clemons wasn't a 3 down end last year, in fact Bennett had more snaps in 2013. Bennett played 89% of DL snaps with TB 2012, Clemons played 88% with Seattle in 2012, looks pretty similar to me. Clemons has us for $9.7 m against the cap in 2014, do you think that he'll have reason to renegotiate his salary knowing we have no replacement for him? We're either paying Bennett outrageous, or Clemons nearly as much against the cap to be 33 in October when Bennett was stealing snaps from him until we ran NASCAR packages. I guess we can blow up the DL and start from scratch.

2. Look no farther then Jason Jones in 2012 to see the difference between proven DE/DT ability and just anybody. If you mean Scruggs, superstar career trajectories don't usually go 2 sacks/ACL injury/sack king. There's Justin Tuck if you want somebody that disappointed when the Giants needed him but padded his stats after they were eliminated from playoff contention. Or rookies.

3. Big Red went out and tested the market and Seattle matched offers to keep him years back. He was cut because 8.5m is crazy to pay for limited pass rushing effort/ability.

Every player is about the money, that's why they punish their bodies, that's why they take years off their lives playing football......in order to make millions of dollars a year, as opposed to sitting at a desk like the rest of us.

To think otherwise is being naive. But like every job, some people love doing what they do, and that's what makes they excel as opposed to just being average..........and Bennett is one of those players. But yeah, he wants to get paid, and I don't blame him.

One thing you will notice is that retired NFL players, who are able to speak more freely, will say get the money. Players still in the league, for the most part, tend to mute themselves so as not to piss off the fans. Bennett is one of those players who is unfiltered. The guy thought he was short changed last year due to an artificially restrained free agent market. Of course he is going to talk about getting paid and the financial loss he thinks he suffered versus projected gain from last year.

Reporters doing their jobs prodded that area and got the quotes they needed to justify their existence. This will be over soon.

Clem collected 11, 11, 11 sacks before signing his extension
Avril collected 8.5, 11, 9.5 sacks before signing a 2 year deal with the Hawks

MB collected 1, 5, 9 before signing his 1 year deal with the Hawks

Hey, MB should hit the open market and see if a team is willing to meet his demands. I'm just trying to level set expectations because while this isn't Costco, he's no Clem or Avril.

Yet he wants more money?

Just say'in.

But he has the added advantage of coming off a superbowl winner. We seem to think that General Managers are incredibly smart (most are) and don't make obvious mistakes (most do). If a GM is not comfortable in their position, they tend to make mistakes because they make decisions based off of how it looks to the public versus whether it's good for the team or not. I can see many GMs who are worried about their jobs bringing in MB because he is a superbowl winner, because they want to make a splash, because they want someone who is a winner and will bring the culture, etc etc etc.

So I think because he is a superbowl winner and is seen by the public as an incredible talent, there will be plenty of GMs out there willing to spend over his true worth just for the statement it makes.

Who do you think you are?

THAT is my biggest pet peeve on .net, people who try to ruin good topics by trying to get them closed. Usually its because they posted something similar and are pissy because your taking attention away from there post. I get that SOME people want to keep the forum nice and clean, but if we are actually having a good, respectful, intelligent, conversation then honesty what is the harm? Does it really bother you so much that you have to come interrupt us in the rudest most asshole way possible? whats worse? 2 posts on the same/similar topics, or being a jerk to your fellow 12s?

NOW CAN I GET A AAAAAAMEN?!?!

My biggest pet peeve are judgmental people who think they know somebody's intentions when in reality they just like spitting baseless venom.

What did I do that what rude? I simply stated the fact that Bennett is being discussed on another thread, which it just so happens that he is. I would think that the moderators would agree that the idea is to keep the forum clean of redundancy. I would also assume that it is posts like yours (which use vulgar terms and name calling) that moderators should filter out.

For the record, I have no bad intentions whatsoever, love the Seahawks, love friendly banter, and have posted nothing that I believe anybody should be offended by.

"what's your deal"?

A'hem, can we stop talking about the talk, and just talk?

I think having an extra thread or two about a given player is fine, provided the discussion involves fresh media or fresh player communications insight (et. al.). Duplicate topics about the exact same thing? different story.

Let's get back on topic, please.

Readyyyy...break!
