To use a basketball term, it's a layup. Instead, it ended in a sack.[/quote]
That's exactly right, RW misses open receivers constantly. He held the ball to long, didn't pick the proper scenarios to user his legs, and his internal clock was broke. None of that was Dumb boy Bevell's fault and the D had a new coordinator. Plus this ain't the old rams, they actually have a QB now.

Ultimately, the onus is on the OC to let the QB know where he's missing things. Most QBs need that outside perspective to get out of their own tunnel vision. If he needed to get the throws out faster, Bevell needs to tell him. If we needed to emphasize the short over the long, then Bevell needed to see it and tell him.

As a Russell fan or apologist in some people's minds, here are things he has to overcome.
- His strong conviction will lead him to sticking with things longer than they should
(e.g. bad game plan, keep forcing things that don't work)
- His reluctance to take risks until late, means he leaves yards on the field
- He leans on his athleticism too much (holding the ball, passing up yards, etc)

Most of the rest are nitpicky and something all QBs deal with at some point (sailing passes, missing reads, reading blitzes, etc). These are generally dealt with by good QBs, as they gain experience.
I don't think any of that is the case.

Just my opinion. Russ knows his line is very raw. He is more focused on where Donald and Quinn are than where his receivers are going to be. Thus the lack of anticipation.

And IMO, Russ has a known proclivity to not challenge covered pass catchers to make a play (unless that pass catcher is Kearse, who Wilson will throw to covered or not). In this game I count several occasions where he had Graham in single coverage. Graham is open in single coverage every time if you put the ball high enough. Part of that is Pete, but part of that is Russ. He has to challenge Graham to go get it in traffic. He can't just rely on passes on the sidelines to challenge receivers.

This picture right here is why Bevel should be fired..wtf is this play design?

Sack0400

Wilson has Lockett with a 10-yard cushion and 1 man to beat, and has a clear throwing lane. Absolutely nothing wrong with this play.

This scenario played itself out time and time again Sunday and Wilson often refused to pull the trigger.

its troublesome that we are still seeing this in year 4.

sacked most of the night.
Which he wouldn't have been if he completed the available short passes as illustrated, which was in fact the entire point of the article and this discussion.

Completion percentage does not relate to sacks, because those are plays on which Wilson actually passed the football instead of taking another unnecessary sack. We're talking about the unnecessary sacks. We don't want our $87-million investment hurt because he couldn't make a read in time.

No one is condemning Wilson - the point is this is an area of his game that he needs to improve, and it is enough of a problem that our division opponent knew they didn't have to worry about short routes because Wilson doesn't like to throw there.

If a QB has a tendency that a defense can exploit, it's an area he needs to work on. Can we admit that Wilson is not in fact perfect and has areas where he needs work?

Russ should have pulled the trigger here, he had enough time before Quinn (who owned Okung) got the sack. He made two bad decisions on this play, not throwing to Lockett, and then bailing right into two of our linemen. There was a hole forming in front of him to step up into/escape through. As Scotte says, I don't think he wanted anything to do with Aaron Donald and so tries to get through a smaller gap to the right.

A pretty sloppy night in general from Russ, after this play he threw a bullet to Graham for 20, but then directly after that he gave it to Lynch on read option when the look suggested he could have kept it for a huge gain (though thankfully Lynch broke free for a big gain himself).

We'll get there, I had this as the toughest game on our schedule, it's a relief to get it out of the way so early and injury free.

I saw the first half of the coach's tape. There were definitely moments where Russ could've pulled the trigger faster, and he made a couple of really perplexing decisions on plays that otherwise could've been really successful. On the INT thrown toward Lynch, they ran a perfect rub on the other side and that area looked like a way better option pre-snap.

In fairness to him, however, the group that really got their butt handed to them was the OL. At least in the 1st half. The four players that the Rams have up front are better all five of our linemen, and it's not even close. Luke Willson gives you nothing in pass protection. I think on most plays, having an extra receiving option was more useful than getting a chip or block from a TE or RB. Russ was definitely up against it due to our lack of physical talent up front.
