The whole league is playing a lot of big nickle.
We're now gonna move toward a big dime.

Short yardage situations and red zone would be my guess. I'm excited about seeing some potential minor scheme adjustments to match the talent and depth on the defensive roster.

Sounds like a great way to get the most out of what Browner does best.

I'm hearing Deone Bucannon and Mark Barron mentioned a lot in regards to Browner's possible role.

Linebacker? I would be interested to see who would come off the field.

I cant see him at LB too much. Not sure how well he could move laterally and/or shed blocks well enough.

My flyover hunch on clues would be AZ. They routinely roll out 5-6 DB/Hybrids. It may be a big nickel version of that.

Yep, he's excellent in the red zone. Super long in tight windows, not really any room to get behind him.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. Is he going to play in the slot with Lane outside in certain situations? Or maybe a bigger package with Sherm/Browner/Shead as the 3 CB's in the nickel? I know we used to play Milloy at LB in nickel/dime packages, but I can't see KJ or Wagner coming off the field, really in any of those situations. We kind of did that because we didn't have LB's. The only player that might come off would be Kam, and I wouldn't agree with that trade either. I'm still having a hard time as seeing this as anything other than a guy that could potentially compete to play RCB in nickel/dime situations.

I think he'll become a TE coverage CB/DB hybrid.

I need to go back and watch the tape, but i don't recall him being particularly effective against TE while he was here.

I get the reasoning, but i'm not sure there will be enough room on the final 53 for a specialist like that.

There is for some reason a great deal of negativity around Browner after this last season in N.O. If he has retained his speed or recovered from his MCL injury of last season he will be the same physical player he always was, clearly the FO thinks as much. For sure I see him making the team but he will need to prove he still can play instead of it being assumed he can. He's a CB but could become a hybrid CB/DB/death backer type situational player. Time will tell.

Basis, this guy is very solid at jamming the receiver off the line and you can bet the team will use that skill to attempt to defeat a vulnerability to the TE seam routes by disrupting timing and having a big body to lean on the TEs and outmuscle them in contested and jumpball situations. He's still fast enough to hang with almost every TE He will still retain his effectiveness against big WRs and will be platooned situationally. He remains a significant physical force when on the field and adds toughness back to a DB corps that was somewhat anemic last season that way.

Winning the first 5 yards is most of the battle in Pete's scheme. Browner can certainly do that.

The Browner signing may also tell us Pete and John's comfortability with the DL, since you can't have Browner on the field if the QB has time.

I think they brought in Browner primarily to compete at outside corner. But with that said, I think Browner's appeal as a special teams contributor is going to motivate Pete to keep Browner around even if he fails at corner. Seeing him get a rep here, a rep there at safety or linebacker wouldn't shock me, but I think if he can't hack it at CB then his main reason for sticking around would be special teams value.

I see him more as a Linebacker, like someone else mentioned Kelcie McCray looked good last year in a back up roll.

I see him in a versatility type db "rover" style role. He brings a physicality and edge to our defense and I for one was
severely bummed when he left. He'll be on the 53 man roster this September.

Outside of some rare matchups/situations, I don't see him as a safety. He can press and run down a straight line, but I don't see the lateral explosiveness. Historically abused in zones. Seems outside his wheelhouse. Maybe you use him as some sort of LB/SS/NCB hybrid if there's a great receiving TE in the game; that might work. But again, I think it would have to be very situational and opponent-dependent.

I think we see those rare matchups/situations a little more than rarely this season.

If you look at Browner as a short-term solution to a currently unknown problem, one needs only to take a look at this year's schedule. A handful of the squads we will face, particularly at home, have a penchant for throwing caution to the wind on offense and getting frisky and risky; early, and often.

Those QB's will take a peek in the secondary before the snap, will see Browner and Kam, and remember the brief conversations he had with a few of his receivers before the game... "Pssst, don't throw it to me on crossing routes today bro!".

In the NFL it's a game of innovations and everyone adjusting to catch up. I can see teams adjusting to the dynamic TE's and taller WR by covering them with the Brandon Browner types or drafting the Tanner MacEvoy types. I would love to see us pick MacEvoy to cover the Big mismatches and eventually take over at SS. He has elite length and agility and he is considered one of the more intelligent prospects. Get him.
This...

One of the reasons I am enthusiastic about McEvoy is that he is also capable of laying some Chancellor-esque hits...and quick enough to get where he needs to deliver them.
