By playing the Panthers to open the season we are breaking a four-year streak in which we started every year with a divisional game. In 2009 we opened against the Rams at home, in 2010 it was the 49ers at home, in 2011 it was the 49ers in SF and last year it was the Cardinals in AZ.
We won the two home games and lost the two road games, so we started off the last two seasons not only 0-1 overall but 0-1 in the division. At least this year if we drop the game at Carolina we won't find ourselves in an early divisional hole again.
