You should watch more MMA, it really has changed in the last few years. No longer are entire fights spent on the ground hugging each other, instead it's turned into a strikers game. The strikers have also been coming in with interesting styles. Before MMA was just a mixture of boxing, muay thai (kickboxing), wrestling and Brazilian JiuJitsu. Now you got guys with backgrounds in various Karates, a guy with a background in kung fu, and a top tier fighter has a background mostly in judo. Heck one guy integrates capoeira into his fighting at times. MMA has changed, and now there is a lot of variety, where as before most of it was largely the same.
