I would love to give him a look. Use to watch him play when I lived in Australia Guy is obviosly talented and a competitor. Considering he hasn't played much NFL I think given time he could become a player that can contribute to a team. He has the talent, and with the right coaching (Cardinals/Seahawks) might make an impact.

....I know...its not like the 49ers have coaches.

Tom Rathman? Who's THAT guy?

A fullback? What does he teach, "Just run in to the first guy you see with a different color jersey on."?

It is rather laughable that ringles actually thinks the cards would be a better place for a running back to get coaching. They haven't had a good running game since they were in St. Louis.

I see you are still living in the past. I believe our coaches are better than yours. You guys couldn't even get coaches to come over and take promotions because of how your Child FO runs his mouth leaking everything left and right.

He's showing up a second game in a row. Not a fan of the 9ers. But a fan of the player. He's going to make it.

He also had a couple decent punt returns. Good person, good story.

FYI: Trolls, know the drill...exit door is that way. :141847_bnono:

Uh, Jarryd Haynes RB coach (Tom Rathman) has been the 49ers RB coach since 2009.

You might actually want to take a look at the assistant coaches. MANY of them have coordinator and HC experience.

When was the last time the Cards had a 1000 yard back? Ya, I'm good with Tom Rathman thank you.

I love this guy. He looks great tonight.

I like him too. He's gonna get killed if he keeps running upright like that, but he might just be special as a return specialist.

He's kind of a wierd player (whoulda thunk it). He's this big guy who is just slippery as heck, but when a defender squares him up solid his feet go dead. Not a great trait to have as an NFL running back, but he appears to make up for it with other skills. If he learns to be the bully that he can be at that size, he might really be onto something. I'm rooting for the guy. He's got some cajones doing what he did.

Ya, that sounds pretty accurate. When playing RB, he has ZERO natural body lean. I'll say this for him though: The first defender almost never gets him, he's far more slippery than you'd think for a guy his size, he has zero fear catching punts, and he's got a hell of a stiff arm.

For one thing, Rathman led all NFL RBs in receptions in 1989 (not Roger Craig). The guy was a legit top 3 FB in the league during his tenure, tremendous at blocking and hard running.

He not only played with Craig and Ricky Watters but had his first stint of RB coaching back in '97 thru '02 with the 49ers where he would work with Garrison Hearst and Charlie Garner. He leaves to Detroit and Oakland for a few years then rejoins the 49ers with Frank Gore as the centerpiece of the team. The entire team is dismantled and he's still here. In many ways he represents the franchise from the end of the Bill Walsh era up till now, save for just two head coaches.

Dude is a legit position coach, but we'll let Ringless tell us otherwise.

I think slipperiness is his special quality, and is difficult to teach. He already has the very quick changing of hands caring the back, and the natural powerful stiff arm. I think that a former fullback such as Rathman would be great for teaching how to lean into guys he is going to run into.

Plus he is fun to watch.

So who do the 9ers keep as running backs?

Hunter probably getting cut, but will SF really carry 4 running backs? Can't imagine they'd cut Mike Davis for Hayne.

Davis has looked pretty good himself this preseason, so no...they won't cut him.

Never thought I'd say this but I think Kendall Hunter is the odd man out. Good player who just can't stay healthy. If they can get him on the field, they may try to feature him and then trade him. That's Baalkes MO. Never release a guy you might be able to get a pick for.

If they can't get him on the field though, my guess is they put him on an injury list or release him.

Definitely rooting for Hayne to make the final cut. Admittedly I saw him as a long shot but he has passed his first test and that is going into the pre-season and seizing his opportunities. The pressure could have easily gotten to him but he has been a standout.

We were very close to signing him . . . now he plays for the dark side. :34853_doh:

He reads his blocks better than any backup RB or returner on our roster.

Uhhh... you know at this point I'd probably rather him over Turbin.

Nah. At this point he has a long, LONG way to go as a RB, and the Hawks already have their returner in Lockett. I'd be vey uncomfortable if Hayne was the 9ers #2 RB. He's great in space and his rugby stiff arm is awesome, but in tight quarters (i.e. 90% of runs) he's nowhere close to someone to count on. To his credit though the stretch zones the 9ers have built into their offense do play to his ability though (his two big runs as an RB have both come off that play).

Right now I think he'll likely make the 53 as a return specialist, with Hunter being the odd man out.

As for the 9ers carrying four RBs, they always carry five RBs/FBs, so that will be totally typical for them and not put any strain anywhere. We also get a sense that this is the plan (4 RBs, 1 FB) from the Cowboys game in which they were using their TEs (who will be active on game days) as 2nd string FBs.

With Hyde as the return specialist it also means that Ellington doesn't become the de facto #3 WR, which was the case when he was also active as a return specialist. Hayne also brings more to the coverage units than Ellington did. Right now Hayne is simply playing his way onto the roster.

Right now for the backfield I'd guess:

53: Hyde. Bush. Hayne, Miller, Davis
53 but not Active 46: Davis
Practice Squad: Millard
Cut: Hunter, Gaskins

For my money, assuming Hunter makes it back to previous form I prefer Hunter to Bush, but the team seems really high on Bush, although I have my doubts about that.

But Turbin is solid and steady. At least that is what people keep telling me.

Turbin is solid at getting a 1/2 yard then falling down.

^^^ Spoiled by Lynch, IMO.

Turbin is easily in the top half of #2 RBs (non-specialist/situational; i.e. Bernard) in the NFL IMO.

He's not an incumbent starter IMO, but very few #2 backs are.
