We were very close to signing him . . . now he plays for the dark side. :34853_doh:

He reads his blocks better than any backup RB or returner on our roster.

Uhhh... you know at this point I'd probably rather him over Turbin.

But Turbin is solid and steady. At least that is what people keep telling me.

Turbin is solid at getting a 1/2 yard then falling down.

Turbin has had more yards taken away from him by holding penalties than any RB I have seen with as few carries. The penalties were mostly unnecessary too. He would have averaged well over six yards per carry in 2013 without the penalties.

I love this guy. He looks great tonight.

I like him too. He's gonna get killed if he keeps running upright like that, but he might just be special as a return specialist.
That was the point I was going to make as well, strips might be an issue if he doesn't learn to get lower as well, but so'far he has surprised me.

Wasn't he elite in rugby where they also strip the ball?

I think he is super elite in space, as Tomsula has said, so I think that Hayne's situational awareness will help him avoid a lot of hits.

Nah. At this point he has a long, LONG way to go as a RB, and the Hawks already have their returner in Lockett. I'd be vey uncomfortable if Hayne was the 9ers #2 RB. He's great in space and his rugby stiff arm is awesome, but in tight quarters (i.e. 90% of runs) he's nowhere close to someone to count on. To his credit though the stretch zones the 9ers have built into their offense do play to his ability though (his two big runs as an RB have both come off that play).

Right now I think he'll likely make the 53 as a return specialist, with Hunter being the odd man out.

As for the 9ers carrying four RBs, they always carry five RBs/FBs, so that will be totally typical for them and not put any strain anywhere. We also get a sense that this is the plan (4 RBs, 1 FB) from the Cowboys game in which they were using their TEs (who will be active on game days) as 2nd string FBs.

With Hyde as the return specialist it also means that Ellington doesn't become the de facto #3 WR, which was the case when he was also active as a return specialist. Hayne also brings more to the coverage units than Ellington did. Right now Hayne is simply playing his way onto the roster.

Right now for the backfield I'd guess:

53: Hyde. Bush. Hayne, Miller, Davis
53 but not Active 46: Davis
Practice Squad: Millard
Cut: Hunter, Gaskins

For my money, assuming Hunter makes it back to previous form I prefer Hunter to Bush, but the team seems really high on Bush, although I have my doubts about that.

I'd hate to see Hunter go, but I think you're right. My guess is that Baalke will look for a trade partner there, but since he hasn't been able to practice or play that might be a tall order. Sucks. I like Hunter, but he's caught in a number game.

^^^^ Yeah. Back for this weeks game, right?

I think we'll get our answer if over the next two weeks they start featuring Hunter and limiting Gaskins (clear camp body) and Hayne's RB snaps.

That's true. Add on over 8 yards per carry if the turf didn't keep tripping him.

Interesting spot for the 9ers to be in.

He's been to effetctive and the hype train has been too ridiculous for him not to make the 53, but I'm not really sure that all things being equal he should be on the 53. Basically, his saving grace is that Hunter isn't ready to be back from his injury.

Long story short is that Hayne provides value in the return game and some limited value on coverage units, but two other guys who will be making the 53 have also been great in the return game (Ellington and White). Ellington will be on the active 46 because of what he does as a WR, whereas White probably won't suit up.

Hayne gets lucky again because Ellington can't stay healthy, but the 9ers also are going to need him as their slot WR.

Basically, Hayne makes the 53 because of Hunter and injuries, and has a good shot at the 46 because of Ellington and injuries. I think the 9ers are also reasonably gun shy about the PR hit they'd take if he didn't make the the 53 and balled out for someone else, and let's be honest: turning Australia into 9ers country is a clear upside for the org as well.

I just hope he makes it so we can tease you about your best player being a Rugby player. :stirthepot:

He's on the 53 man roster now

Basically just a formality.

They've been selling his jersey in the team store for a week.

Mike Davis even clowned him on Twitter for pretending to be surprised today. :)

From an outsiders view he earned that spot, something I would have been surprised by at the beginning of camp.
I think he can be a solid contributer to your team if he is used right.

They need someone to teach tackling technique there, being a Rugby player I think he could show them a lot about it.

Yup he earned it, he's a great returner as well as can carry the rock, when he announced his retirement from rugby I was really intrigued by this guy and wanted him to be Beast Mode's backup at the time. I'll root for him to have success except when he plays the Seahawks that is, but I know he will get his yards even against our running defense, our guys better wrap him up real quick or else he's running over someone.

Really pissed that he's at the 49ers. I love Rugby and want to support this guy.

Perhaps this will lead to more rugby stars attempting to join NFL?? I heard in some circles that in a sense, there were other rugby players comparable or better than him in some regards.

I loved watching the NRL when I was in Australia. He is someone I got to watch a lot. There is a huge difference in tackling technique in the sports. In the NFL it's common for players to just launch there bodies like rockets, while in Rugby it is more of form tackling.

It's too bad too many players go for the big hits instead of the wrap up tackles. We'd have a lot less missed tackles
