Barry literally had no QB. Not applicable, a decent QB and Barry probably has one. He went to the playoffs with a 62 year old Dave Krieg.

As for the rest, we still had close to a 10 defense last year (#13 but having top ten results the 1st 3 quarters while being put in bad situations by our bottom 100 offense). And we had Wilson.

Wilson was given crap to work with and he was shoved into a terrible offense. But let's stop pretending that he would have won the SB or even MADE the SB without Lynch. It wouldn't have happened.

Lynch kept the defense off the field. He wore down the opposing team. And he made Wilson much more dangerous through playaction. He was literally pivotal, evidenced by the complete lack of accomplishment by this team once he left.

Lynch without Wilson? Would he have made the SB? Admittedly, not with Tavaris Jackson. And while I think several QBs would have won the SB with the rest of that roster, Lynch and Wilson were a tremendous combination.

Wilson without Lynch hasn't done anything but win regular season games though. (Unless you count wildcard games as playoff games which they technically are....but just barely). The point is not whether Wilson is important though, but instead what Lynch meant to this team.

No Lynch. No SuperBowl. That is the reality. Wilson hasn't changed that or even won a playoff game of note to disprove it.

Given that? Lynch should get special consideration and his number should be reserved for special players.

No Wilson, no Super Bowl. See how easy that is? BTW, Lynch did crap in the Super Bowl. 15 carries for 39 yards, his only real contribution was a 1 yard TD run. At least Wilson had a good game. Not lights out, but he had a 123.1 passer rating.

Lynch was the balance to the scales on offense, they had to respect both the passing and running games, why balance is important for a Champion, very few can win with being one dimensional.

It gets retired if he's a HoFer. The bar has already been set. Besides, why should we hold back a number when he chose to go play for someone else?

It's a number. He wasn't even the first to wear it. This isn't a Largent/Rice situation.
I dont remember anyone wearing #45 in a regular season game after Easley retired. You don’t have to “retire” a number just stop handing it out until it’s officially retired, like that, or like the Mariners have done with Edgar’s #11.

I still don't believe he deserves it until he makes the HoF. He cared more about Oakland than his teammates.

Too soon, and on a player who is unlikely to be anything more than a JAG. Seems disrespectful.
Mike Tyson was wearing it.

Lynch also benefited greatly from the read option couldn't key on just Lynch or RW would kill you and vice versa.

I agree. HoF players numbers should be retired.

That said, we should allow Duane Brown to keep his number when another Hawk will be in the HoF next year, if not the following year. I gues you can say his number was, "grand fathered"' since the player wasn't in the HoF yet.

And, didn't we assign number 96 to a player before Cortez was a HoFamer?
