Packers GM strange comment

Packers GM Brian Gutenkunst on whether or not they'll pick up Jordan Love's 5th year option:

"It's a lot of money for a guy who hasn't played. But at the same time obviously we're moving forward with him."

Lol what is that? What a vote of no-confidence. Are the Packers headed to mediocrity now or what?

I don't see any problem with it. Love's option is worth 20M. And the Packers might be better off letting him play out his deal and extend him the following season if he performs.

They still have the franchise tag option if he shows himself worthy. You dont want to be on the hook for $20 million if he Sam Darnolds next season.

For comparison the Browns picked up Mayfield's option and had to eat $10M of it in order to move him on. The Giants didn't pick up Jones' option and ended up tagging him at a much higher price. It's risk vs reward and the risks of Love being worth less than $20M are a lot higher than the rewards of him being worth more than $20M. I'd decline the option. He has 1 more year left on his rookie contract as a try-out season before the Packers make a final decision.
