I wouldn't doubt at all that Tannehill was a smokescreen. Talk up the players you don't want. I remember hearing from Russ that JS flat out told him the Hawks weren't going to draft him. I also heard from Mike Salk that after he spent a couple weeks gushing over Wilson, JS approached him at a charity event and told him to stop talking about Russ.

John wanted Russ for over a year. He was extremely careful in hiding just how much he coveted him.
