It's rather surprising they aren't dead last.

30. Seattle Seahawks (19th)
Pass blocking rank: 29th

Run blocking rank: 28th

Penalties ranks: 24th

Stud: None of the starters have earned a positive grade this year, which is telling. But credit to Drew Nowak (-2.8), who hasn’t looked like a complete liability.

Dud: Unfortunately, Justin Britt (-14.8) hasn’t looked any better at guard than he did at tackle.

Summary: It’s almost like the Seahawks have a contempt for their offensive line. Either that, or they’ve got a little too much confidence in the powers of Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch, because not only have they seemingly turned a blind eye towards the unit, they opted to get rid of its best player (Max Unger) last year.

Another equally surprising stat is that the Atlanta Falcons who were horrible last season, are ranked #1. Falcons got levitre and Chester in the offseason and have really solidified their line. That's why they're 4-0. Cable is a proud man.

If I remember right, there were times last year where we were ranked 31st. Annnnnd we still returned to the SB.

Someone better alert them that .NET has declared THIS line the worst in the history of football!!!

Thus their ranking is clearly off :D

The only reason we aren't 32nd is because the two offensive lines ranked worse than us have taken a few more penalties which is taken into account for the final rankings. If PFF only took into account their pass blocking and run blocking ratings, then we are indeed dead last. Given how subjective holding penalties in the NFL are and how unevenly they are called, I don't think penalties should factor into PFF's rankings - or perhaps just dead ball penalties (false starts) should be factored in.

Oh, surprise surprise. Golden Boy's line, who were deemed by many on NFL Network and ESPN as "The worst line they've ever seen" and prompted all sorts of articles about how OL's are getting their QB'S killed, actually comes in about league average. Pop another one in the excuse file for Andy. At least he's the next Peyton Manning in something.

But Wilson holds the ball too long.

Not sure how the ranking disproves this line of thinking....

Some people insist on there being only one explanation for problems, because then the fix is easier.

Of course, whether that has any basis in reality is a different story...

Atlanta are not 4-0 because of the line, let's be right here.

They were a 13-3 team and perennial #1 seed in the NFC with a borderline elite QB until Mike Smith started to mail it in. Now they have a respectable coach and some freshness in the locker room -- guess what. Back to what they were.

Ryan and Julio Jones are the reason they are 4-0 -- and they could easily be or 1-3 if it wasn't some clutch brilliance by that pairing.

Yup. And Julio Jones missed most of last season too. Now that they have their best weapon back, their Offense looks a lot better (what a surprise!).

He sure makes Matty Ice look pretty good. Growing up a Vikes fan, it reminds me of the old Culpepper to Moss thing. When in doubt, throw it to Randy/Julio. Usually works out pretty good.

Yet again, its our D that defines us. That's cool. Once the O gets it figured out, we'll be deadly.

Uh, not that this is what the thread is about, but I would respectfully disagree. "freshness" isn't the reason they are 4-0. The fact that they had a horrible OLINE last year and this year they are playing as the best oline in the league is the reason they are 4-0.

The Seahawks would be 4-0 also if their worst ranked OLINE was instead playing as the best OLINE.

PREACH.

All the problems:

Bevell being unimaginative and seemingly incapable of learning through observation of other teams
PC and JS giving Cable enough rope to hang the OL
JS being cheap at WR and OL
RW not becoming the platonic ideal of an NFL QB fast enough if ever despite his other talents.
A fan base that wants to hold on to the lightning in a bottle by using quick fixes like firing or cutting personnel.

Throwing all the experiments in at the same time makes a kind of sense, I admit.

When we lose our first home game, that is the point I think where the experimentation will be adjusted, for instance with Lewis at center, to provide some semblance of an anchor in there of experienced linemen while the projects learn. Could happen sooner, but the first home loss is the point where the post-season starts to be threatened.
