Seattle plays Carolina a lot because they finish in the same spot as us in their division a lot. The schedule is set as 6 divisional games, 4 vs. a rotating NFC division, 4 vs. a rotating AFC division, an 2 vs. opponents who finished in the same spot in their division in conference that are not in the division we are already scheduled to play. We played Carolina this year because we both finished in 2nd in 2017. We play them next year because we play the entire NFC South. Our 2 opponents determined by our finish this year are Minnesota and Philadelphia. For the most part, the NFL schedule does have some logical consistency.

However, going to Pittsburgh for our 3rd matchup out of 4 reeks of shenanigans.

Further for those upset about us playing Carolina, this is why we play them so often:

We played them in 2012 because we both finished in 3rd in 2011.
We played them in 2013 because we played the entire NFC South.
We played them in 2014 because we both finished in 1st in 2013.
We played them in 2015 because we both finished in 1st in 2014.
We played them in 2016 because we played the entire NFC South.
We didn't play them in 2017 as we finished in 1st while Carolina finished in 4th in 2016.
We played them in 2018 because we both finished in 2nd in 2017.
We play them in 2019 because we play the entire NFC South.

It's not some big NFL conspiracy.

See, that's what doesn't make sense! It has always been an 8 year (or back to back) rotation for hosting teams in NFC vs AFC matchups. ALWAYS. Something is going on here and dammit, I'm going to get to the bottom of it.

Since the realingment in 2002, this will be the 5th time Seattle has played the AFC North. Here are the matchups:

2003
SEA @ CIN
SEA@ BAL
CLE @ SEA
PIT @ SEA

2007
CIN @ SEA
BAL @ SEA
SEA @ CLE
SEA @ PIT

2011
CIN @ SEA
BAL @ SEA
SEA @ CLE
SEA @ PIT

2015
SEA @ CIN
SEA @ BAL
CLE @ SEA
PIT @ SEA

THE ANATOMY OF THE NFL SCHEDULE. The NFL's scheduling formula ensures that all teams will play every team from every division in the other conference once every four years. ... Six games against divisional opponents — two games per team, one at home and one on the road.

When the new scheduling system came out Seattle was paired with SF in regards to the Home/Away bit. In 2010 the NFL changed the pairings to limit the amount of trips east coast teams make to the west coast in a season and as a result Seattle was then paired with STL. This is why the double between 2007 and 2011. If you look at the Rams' history it changes every 4 years.

And yet, they can't eliminate 10am starts for west coast teams.

I love the Seahawks, but I hate the NFL.

My mock schedule

Week 1: @ SF

Week 2: LA TNF

Week 3: @ PIT SNF

Week 4: AZ

Week 5: BAL

Week 6: NO SNF

Week 7: @ ATL 10am

Week 8: BYE

Week 9: @ CLE MNF

Week 10: TB

Week 11: @ CAR 10am

Week 12: CIN

Week 13: MIN

Week 14: @ PHI 1pm (Fox Game of the Week)

Week 15: @ LA SNF

Week 16: @ AZ

Week 17: SF

If the Seahawks pull off the near impossible (3%) and win the Superbowl. They would then open with New Orleans week 1 on SNF. Then bump everything down 1 week accordingly.
