Average age is a particularly bad way to measure how "young" a team is. It can be significantly affected by having a Brady or Rodgers at the helm, and by having a stable of journeymen role players or backups that aren't integral to the future of the team

When people talk about a "young team," they are referring to the likelihood of a large percent of the current starters sticking around for a while, to build a team.

A better way would be to compare how many of the starters are on 1st or 2nd contracts. For the Seahawks 7 of 12 offensive starters are on first or second contracts, and 8 of the current 11 starting defense are on first or second.

Our oldest unit is the D-line, but that is a position that can remain productive longer than others.

Yeah, a much more sensible way to look at it.

Given the vagaries of contracts, maybe a better way would be just to put the players into tranches of 4 or less years experience, 5 to 7 years, 8 to 10, 10 to 12, and greater than 12.

It would be nice to control for cap hit and minute of time played, but that might be too granular. Probably best to just divide it into starting lineup, and backups.

Not sure if the kickers and long-snapper should be included in the math. I lean towards leaving them out of it.

Where do we fall vs the average? In terms of average youth of starters?
We don't look that young.
I don't think our youth is exceptional vs most other teams but it would be nice to know the #s.

We start 4 rookies. Look around the league and tell me how many teams start 4 rookies and play 5 regularly
And how many 2nd/3rd year players as well? Plus all the leadership changes this past season. Russ may've been checked out but he was still the captain. Filling Wags' shoes is a huge step for a 3rd year player.

Young or old, it make no difference.

Young or old, it’s not like the expectations of this year is Super Bowl or bust, hell, it’s not even wild card…

I still have faith there will be better days ahead for Seattle. Those days may be next year, 5 years, or even over 10 years but hell, nothing even winning last forever. At some point, you may need to lose in order to win big again.

I’m still excited to see how this team plays even if the Ws aren’t expected this season.

The young excuse is just a euphemism for poor coaching and lack of talent. "It's okay, gize! They're young!"

It's the young players that are actually playing well. It's the coaches and the veterans that need to pick it up.

Meh. Seems like a whole lotta nothing. The difference between 9th and 25th youngest rosters is half a year. People call the Seahawks young because of how many key starters are young players. No one is like "hmm, looks like they're about half a year older on average than the younger rosters in the NFL."
