Bryan Mone is injured, and he wasn't great before the injury. Why are we holding on to him? Any insights?

Maybe just because big bodies like his (6' 3", 345 lbs.) are hard to find.

He's pretty good against the run imo. Also, Pete knows what he's doing and what he likes. No idea how the contract is structured. Maybe they're stuck with a good chunk of change if they release him?

Probably because they have not come to an agreement with him regarding an injury settlement. He's not that great but Seahawks don't have much depth at NT and Mone can at least play that role. He was a part of the poor run defense last season (he played 13 games). It's not like the run defense took a dive once he got hurt. They were terrible all season long.

May be his contract? We let Woods and Poona go, and kept him?

Could be. He's younger than Woods and bigger than Poona (I said bigger not better). So maybe that's why too. Personally, I'd rather they had kept one of those guys over Mone.

Teams can't simply release injured players. They need to be medically cleared first or the team needs to reach an injury settlement with the player. If a team "waives" an injured player then what really happens is that other teams get a chance to claim him, and if nobody does then the player goes to the original team's Injured Reserve list. Remember how we didn't release Kam until the 2019 off-season even though he had the neck injury in 2017? If Mone's injury turns out to be career ending then we will likely keep on the roster until next fall after which we'll waive him with an injury settlement.

Often contracts have unpublished clauses that pay less when a player is on the injured reserve list. There are different minimum salaries for active players and inactive players, and often a contract will include both. It doesn't benefit the agents to talk about the lower values so we often don't know about them. Mone's contract on OTC and Spotrac may not accurately reflect these "up-down" values.

Came to post this. I surmise the Seahawks would love to waive him, and take the savings to get a healthy player, but there are rules for waiving injured veterans, and guarantees for injury baked into the contract that can be handled with a potential settlement.

Long story short, they are stuck with Mone for 1 more year before it makes sense to cut him. Just gotta hope he can contribute some tonwards the end of the season in the meantime.

Exactly this. There was an article on the topic a few months ago. They basically realize zero savings in cutting him at this point because of his injury. So they are better off seeing how he heals and then plays and hope all goes well.

The Seahawks would save some money from cutting him but not much. The CBA has specific injury protections for vested veterans. There is no "injury settlement" when it comes to veterans, as the amount they would be paid is determined in the CBA. This is what happened with Chris Carson.

Because his base salary isn't that high, I think the team feels it is worth keeping him around. He has some per-game roster bonus money that will go away assuming he starts the year on PUP.

I thought he might be cut before June 1 since he was due a $500K roster bonus that day. The big thing we don't know is what's his true medical status, and what the team thinks his potential is to contribute in 2023.

He has never really shown anything. What were they thinking giving him this kind of a contract?
