Why does the site ask for reason of deletion?

Does somebody see what we put in there? I usually don't type anything. Just curious.

Technically there are 2 types of delete - soft delete and hard delete. A soft delete effectively hides the item, (be it post, sportsbook event, media, etc), and renumbers it. Thus: Soft deleted post 2 would become invisible post 1.001 and visible post 3 would now show as post 2. A hard deleted post is fully deleted. When performed by the original poster the action is always a soft delete.
Advice to posters depends on any time limit on the edit or delete option. Sportshoop dot la has a 10 minute edit or delete limit so if you post something questionable it's there for good. The plus to a short time limit is trolls and abusive posters don't get to hide their behaviour later on. The downside is you can't correct spelling mistakes, dates, or minor details.
Generally if you have time you should manually obliterate the whole object using the edit function and replace it with "Deleted by user" and then post "Double Post" as the reason for the delete - even if this is a lie. This minimises the risk of someone with access resurrecting a post or tampering with history 2 years after an event. It depends on the level of paranoia.

The soft delete does have positive uses. For example an admin creating a rules thread could have several blank pages after the rules soft-deleted. This would mean there was the opportunity to insert new pages at post #2, #3, etc when the rules were updated. It's also useful in creating events for the Sportsbook and Pick'em software if those add-ons are paid for.

There's also a standard default "ooops day drinking again, my bad" option.

It’s optional. I actually like using it when I was a mod, gives the poster some clarification on why a post was edited/deleted. I wish they used it more here. It’s would cut down on the why did my post get edited inquiry’s .

Pretty sure Fender is talking about him deleting his own posts.

This software/platform wasn’t in the equation when you were a mod.

As stated, it's bang standard for the software the forum runs on these days (Xenforo) and not really an active decision made by anyone.

Moderators can see all deleted posts and the reason you include, if any. It's totally optional. Moderators can also delete any post themselves, and including a small reason for the deletion of a post helps clear some stuff up if it was a moderation decision to delete it.

I always type Jomamma as reason for deletion.
