Should the Seahawks pull off the repeat, and it comes at the hands of the Patriots.. they will have knocked off Peyton Manning (2nd all time leading passer in NFL History) and Tom Brady (5th all time leading passer in NFL History) in consecutive Super Bowls.
Looking at past repeat champions.. here are the QB's that were defeated by each of those.
Super Bowl I, II - Green Bay Packers def. Len Dawson (Chiefs), Daryle Lamonica (Raiders)
Super Bowl VII, VIII - Miami Dolphins def. Bill Kilmer (Redskins), Fran Tarkenton (Vikings)
Super Bowl IX, X - Pittsburgh Steelers def. Fran Tarkenton (Vikings), Roger Staubach (Cowboys)
Super Bowl XIII, XIV - Pittsburgh Steelers def. Roger Staubach (Cowboys), Vince Ferragamo (L.A. Rams)
Super Bowl XXIII, XXIV - San Francisco 49ers def. Boomer Esiason (Bengals), John Elway (Broncos)
Super Bowl XXVII, XXVIII - Dallas Cowboys def. Frank Reich/Jim Kelly (Bills), Jim Kelly (Bills)
Super Bowl XXXII, XXXIII - Denver Broncos def. Brett Favre (Packers), Chris Chandler (Falcons)
Super Bowl XXXVIII, XXXIX - New England Patriots def. Jake Delhomme (Panthers), Donovan McNabb (Eagles)
Obviously, football is a team game.. but the icon always identified with teams - especially championship teams - is the quarterbacks.
Back-to-back Super Bowl wins over two of the most decorated quarterbacks of all-time would have to vault this Seahawks defense into the talks of being the best unit of all-time right? And legacy wise, Russell Wilson .. even at age 26 .. would already have a resume that players could only dream of.
This isn't even factoring in the fact that to get to this possible back-to-back scenario that they will have to defeat Aaron Rodgers, a quarterback that's clearly headed for Canton in his own right.. and a decade from now will probably be in the conversation of best QB to ever play in the game.
If you're a historical junkie like I am.. this is really, really cool. And may never be seen again.
