First, this was the best LB in football last year. The year he was drafted, I only really considered that either he or Hightower would be able to play MLB in the Seahawks scheme. If you're Under, the MLB has the strongside B gap. If you're Over, the MLB has the strong side A gap. In both cases, our MLB can't deviate from their gap. You'll be facing OL a lot of the time because we're a gap responsible defense in our run defense. It's been preached forever that every man has to do their job. Also, being a cover 3 team came into play where your MLB also has to cover 1/4th of the short and mid zones vs a coverage like cover 2 where you only cover 1/5th. Cover 2 is easier on your LBs even though Wagner could run a cover 2 buc no problem. Man coverage was also a consideration.
In this vid, for only one year, you see repeatedly the sheer amount of power this dude has when he makes contact and he does it in a controlled manner vs an over extended one, which is obviously harder. It would be an infinitely better vid if they showed the ones where he's tossing a full on NFL Guard aside. That part is a huge plus in our gap responsible 1 gap scheme where he's strong A or B.
