The Legion of Boom.

Hearing that get thrown around so much nationally it's only really just starting to sink in that we have a historically good secondary with one of the best nicknames in NFL history.

What was the most recent good defensive unit nickname? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Obviously we know about all those but have there been any recently, like in the past 10-15 years?

These aren't in the last 15 years but...

Fearsome Foursome - LA Rams DL
Blue Wave - Seahawks in the 80s
Orange Crush - Broncos
Killer Bees - Miami Dolphins

As far as defensive units go, the 2000 Ravens and 2002 Bucs deserved nicknames, but it just seems like it didn't happen.

It could have something to do with the fact that sports reporting in the 60s and 70s was much more "artistic" in nature, and a clever or memorable metaphor could stick.

I don't know that nicknames could be driven that way any longer, due to the fragmentation of sport reporting/discussion over the internet.

Well you weren't clear about timeframes. "Recent" is relative.

Since 2004? No idea.
Since 1999? Well, what were the 2000 Ravens called?

They tend to just call them by the year they played (85 Bears, 2000 Ravens).

Might be a result of free agency keeping teams from retaining players long enough to get a nickname.

The Falcons were nicknamed the "the dirty birds", I would think that was fairly recent since they hadn't had much success prior to 1998.
