Bummer. Both are good moves, IMO.
Only needed to make them because they failed to make them earlier
But seriously, having a good kicker is pretty underrated. How many games did David Akers cost the 9ers this year? At least 2, both against the Rams.
Jacobs was released at the perfect time because even if he is picked up by a team he can't play for them until after the Super Bowl.
Had they released him any earlier some team could have picked him up and played him for the end of the season/playoffs.
Akers was injured all season long, Harbaugh didn't have any other option because nobody else was available. That's the reason why he said the 49ers will probably have 2 kickers on their roster for the playoffs.
