Salary cap effect (assuming the detailed reports of the structure are accurate) are that he will receive a $7.5M signing bonus and a '15 salary of $4.5M....that would keep his '15 cap hit at the same as it was, $7M (1/3 of the $7.5M+the salary), should he decide to retire after the '15 season and does it before 6/1/16, there would be $5M against the '16 cap. Should he "decide" (I am thinking it might be one of the things discussed in the meeting) to retire after 6/1/16, the dead cap would be split as $2.5M in each of '16 & '17. Should he actually play out the 3 yrs, cap hits would be $11.5M for '16 and $12.5M for '17.

Good news now they can actually move forward and plan for the time when he retires (which I will bet will be after this year maybe 2016 maximum). Not a fan of giving any running back that kind of money but I understand it where Marshawn is concerned given he and Russell are basically the entire offense currently.

Overjoyed! The first happy thoughts of football since the super bowl.

Well earned Marshawn!

How does dead money work if the player decides to retire. Let's say Lynch decides to retire after 2016. Does the team take the $2.5M hit in 2017?

Thanks

Yes. But since his base salary is 7 million + a 3 million roster bonus in 2017 the Hawks would save 10 million on the cap if Lynch isn't on the roster in 2017. If hes on the roster his cap hit is 12.5 million.

Unless the Seahawks move to recoup that part of Lynch's signing bonus. But they've basically said they're not going to do that.

Yes, retirement of a player is treated the same as the release of a player. The remainder of Lynch's signing bonus ($5 million after 2015, $2.5 million after 2016) would count against next year's cap.

That's why some people are describing this as a one year, $13.5 million deal with $5 million of that number counting toward next year's cap if Lynch decides to retire after this season.

this is perfect because Beast Mode has 1 or 2 more good years in him (maybe more? idk...running backs fall off at age 30)

i smell Beast Quake Part III coming next season

Excellent news! Marshawn retires a Hawk, as it should be. Nice to have this done so it doesn't hang over the FA or draft moves.
