Hmm...Interesting 4th and 5th-round picks. Obviously, the plan was to address the IOL and DI on day 3 big time. I feel much better about the draft now. Not that I have a problem with the day 1 and 2 picks. I was just getting a little anxious about the OL and DL lack of attention.

Does anyone have any idea why he was still available in the 5th round? From what I've read he should have gone much higher.

Yes I can.

Will I ?

I’ll try when I have time to look it all up and ensure accuracy.
In the meantime feel free to contribute whatever you find.

Of course. I’m just saying it makes it easier for us to follow them all at the header level throughout our draft discussion.

And I case nobody thought about it.

No matter what our personal feelings for the coach over yonder, he’s not stupid and he keeps good people on his staff.

This kid wouldn’t be in the position he was if he was a slouch.
That program wasn’t/isn’t in the position that they have to put anyone into a spot. They have plenty of choices.

Was Blythe and all American? this dude won the Rimmington award and an outland trophy. Looks like an upgrade to me.

I'm talking about profile. He's super smart, not super strong.

Also, I'm 5'9," and my hands are as big as his.

EDIT: I'm not ragging on the guy. If he has a career like Blythe's, that's stellar for a fifth-round pick.

I am wondering what you base that on considering he did the most reps of any center at the combine.

Posted in gameday, I was hoping for this guy at 104. Getting him 2 picks later is just icing on the cake. 3rd round talent. Might be 2nd in a draft with more IOL demand. I think he just slipped through.

Captain at U Virginia and Alternate Captain at Michigan, so follows the trend. Smart. Probably top 2 center in the draft. Was an immediate starter in 2 different systems, after leaving the Air Force. Rimington finalist in 21 and winner in 22. Outland winner 22 (Best college IOL)

Love this pick

Speaking of bench reps...

Tied for second at the combine with 34 is our own Anthony Bradford.

That said, the bench press rep is becoming obsolete. In 2022, only 43 of 324 prospects opted to bench. From an interior line/ center perspective, I'd personally be much more interested in the squat. It's the lower body that counts.

Not uber athletic and not a monster in size but if you put two quality guards next to him you can minimize his weaknesses.

Several different scouting reports.

Here's NFL.com's:

Weaknesses
  • Limited lateral range as a run blocker.
  • Not enough knockback pop into first contact.
  • Allows nose tackle to separate and play off him.
  • Sustain and finish are very average.
  • Unable to slide quickly enough to recover his edge.
  • Can be pulled forward over his toes by the rusher.
  • Chases and loses gap responsibility against twists.

Go read all my posts yesterday when I was telling people to Relax and said this is exactly what they would do. One poster who won't be named chided me saying you don't get good IOL in the 3rd or 4th round. I will trust in PC before some poster who fade's away.

I've been watching videos on him since the pick (he was completely off my radar prior to the Hawks selecting him). It doesn't seem like strength or power is an issue. His weakness is balance and leverage. I think both are correctable with NFL coaching. Since the Hawks already signed a quality center to shore up the position, they don't need him to start right away.

A late-round pick with upside and correctable weaknesses seems like a damn good use of the draft.

That's good to hear. He definitely doesn't need to start right away. Also, he probably makes good mental contributions to that o-line room right away.
