I'm with @MizzouHawkGal on this one. I don't care how much smoke Pete Carroll blows, Drew Lock is not a starting quality NFL quarterback. That doesn't mean he'll never get another start, only that if it does happen, it will be by default and not the first option for us or any other team.
Pete & John giving Lock the $$$$ to stay on as Genos' backup isn't blowing smoke, you don't invest that kind of bumped money in someone unless you've seen a significance in progress over the last year.
Pete isn't Coaching/Deciding in a vacuum, there are others on the staff that he trust & will draw from.
I heard a whole hell of a lot of unwarranted and nonsensical criticisms' about how Geno was a washed up & washed out Quarterback and would be a disaster, well, how dumb do those critic's look now?
Pete & Co. wasn't buying the crap-hype, they KNEW better.

I could name a few teams where he could be named the starter right now - Bucs, Titans, and Packers.

Which begs the question, if one of these teams offers a trade package (say 3rd or 4th rounder) for Drew Lock do you plug the trigger on it? (and no I'm not advocating trading him) but Pete Carroll will help his players with trade, etc if it is in their best interest. Starting in the NFL is definitely in the best interest for Lock.
How about Denver? Think they would like him as their starting QB. He’s got to be better than the guy they have now! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Quite a bit of the distaste for Lock feels very eerily similar to the distaste for Geno a couple years back...

Obviously Pete and Co did something right with Geno and it's a good boat to be in right now with Lock probably going through the same process that turned Geno from washed up to shining bright. If anyone is lucky, we should count ourselves lucky that whatever they're doing is working.

I'm not ready to give up on Lock yet, haven't been since it was reported that JS targeted Lock with the Wilson trade. JS apparently sees something in Lock, and as of right now I trust JS when it comes to QB's.

We literally might just be as surprised with the results of Lock starting as we were when Geno first started...nobody knows the future.

Neither Pete nor any other coach gets it right 100% of the time, but I'd trust Pete's judgment over that of any armchair coach/quarterback. He has years of experience coaching at the college and pro levels. We don't. He sees something in Lock. Will Drew pan out? Who knows. But at least he's now getting consistent coaching to give him the chance to thrive.

I guess if you wanna qualify the work and prep that Geno put in as 'luck', you can. Geno stuck here because Pete saw what he was capable of well before he took over. So did his teammates. That's why Pete was getting clobbered when fans and media thought he was crazy for seemingly handing the starting job to him. He knew what he could do. And then, he did it.

Lock was brought here with the thought that he could be the future of the franchise. He won't need 'luck' to get an opportunity if he wants it. Pete and John will give it to him.
I am not questioning the amount of work Geno put into resurrecting his career. But the fact is that he would never have gotten a chance to be a starter had Russell stuck with the team. He was 'lucky' that Russell got traded as no other team would have taken a chance on him.

Exactly. Geno was a FA in 2022 offseason and came back to Seattle on a 1 year contract. Which suggests to me that he had little interest from other teams. Drew Lock, on the other hand, had interest from the Bucs earlier this offseason but decided to come back to Seattle. I believe he made that decision after the Bucs decided to sign Mayfield.

Two things Lock has done, had a second year in a system for a change, good coaching and a year to un learn bad habits developed by playing with a lousy Denver team and coaching, the survival save your life skills over time can become flaws in mechanics over time if that becomes your normal.

I mean look at Me3 in Denver last year, would you call him a starter if that season was his first in the league ?

I kind of doubt it. Every team needs a competent backup.

If every team needs a competent backup there must be a lucrative deal available for him. And I venture to say not every team out there has a starter better than Lock, so...
We're lucky he came back to us!

I think we are lucky to have two excellent quarterbacks this season.
Lock really impressed me right away against the Vikings with the touchdown pass to Easop Winston...against triple coverage. He has a "high ceiling", but got off to a tough start in Denver.

Geno has been impressive right from the first game of last season and I believe he has a future in coaching after he "hangs up his cleats" as a player.
We are in good hands...

Thing is I'm not 100% in on Geno either half a season doesn't cut it for me he has alot to prove still in my opinion. And Lock has way more then Geno to prove at that.

I agree. I think if he has a chance of becoming a real good QB, it would be here under #7 just like #7 did with #3. He has the tools , it's mental .

Thing is, Geno has obviously Proven his worth to Pete & John, as they gave him a damned decent contract, and it's no contest, as they are experts in the field, so their player evaluations far exceed what anybody OUTSIDE the organization has to offer up.

Lock has been compared to Favre and I think that might be a good way to show that Lock can improve and flourish in the right system. Cut down on turnovers and improve his mechanics (eg feet). Improve pre snap reads and he has a shot of sticking around in the NFL for a long time.

These days QBs are playing longer in the NFL and experience matters a lot more because of it. Which is why being a journeyman until you receive a starting shot is increasingly becoming more common than a rarity these days.

Lock is getting the CORRECT Coaching regimen with the Waldron system, and with the chance to CORRECT the 'Thrown-to-The-Dog' mistakes made by the 'Denver Downers'
It's sad as hell knowing that he wasn't prepped to succeed in the NFL....There's a hell of a lot of bad habits that needed breaking, and he's getting the RIGHT Coaching that will lead him in the right direction, whether it be here in Seattle, or somewhere else, I don't know, but, he has the tools & is good enough RIGHT NOW to be a starter.
Drew is a great back-up to Geno, ESPECIALLY with the Waldron system that's being employed.

I'm telling you now, if it ever clicks 100% for Lock in this offense, he will be a franchise guy. He has the talent. He just needs for the game to slow down for him and to learn when and when not to force things.

From the looks of his movement in the pocket, the way he sees the field, the touch he's adding to his game, the discipline in not making the dumb throw... all of that is noticeably improved and matters whether it's preseason or not. You can clearly tell he's vastly improved.

Hope for all of our sakes that he continues to grow in the system.

I really like your spiel if it was written two years ago. I think Lock has improved beyond what his Denver reputation had revealed. I'm not seeing happy feet. I'm seeing a guy that efficiently sidesteps pressure as if it has been rehearsed in his mind, keeping his eyes downfield, and then stepping forward into his throws. Farve had unreal arm strength, and it gave him such a false sense of security that he routinely threw off of his back foot or across his body and managed to pull it off with an impressive level of success (but his bad mechanics were still creating a turnover concern). I'm not seeing any of that from Lock. I'm seeing a guy that confidently repositions within the pocket, with little wasted movement, but still employs a great throwing motion. What really sticks out is his accuracy. His touchdown throw to Easop Winston Jr against the Vikings was a laser shot that was thrown within a very small window, perfectly timed and placed. It was easily the most impressive throw by a Seattle quarterback (or in my opinion, compared to anyone else in the league) during this 2023 preseason. Considering that Seattle ranked 27th in Red Zone efficiency last year, I'm not quite sure why people aren't raving more about that particular red zone play. It is certainly a play worth taking a second look at before passing judgment.

Lock's consistency has been rock solid this preseason, but similar in context to the preseason hype about Jordan Love, we need to see it when opposing teams are disguising their coverages and are using well-rehearsed game plans. Similarly, this is all that Lock has left to show, and barring injury, we aren't going to be able to see it. We can only trust what are eyes have shown us in preseason and my eyes have seen plenty enough. I would remain very confident if he were forced to finish the season for us.
