AFC South Scheduling

Something I don't get about our upcoming slate of AFC South games...

When the NFL realigned in 2002 and set up the new scheduling system, one of the "highlights" that was mentioned was that this would allow a fan to see all 32 teams play in his home team's stadium over the course of an 8-year stretch. It was touted as a way to expand the fans' access to the teams and to give them a fuller NFL experience.

Okay, great.

But we've seen the flaws in that system over and over again, and we're seeing it again this season with our AFC South scheduling.

This year, the Seahawks will face Houston and Indy on the road, while hosting Jax and Tennessee. The same way they did in 2009.

In 2011, the Seahawks hosted the Ravens and Bengals while traveling to Pittsburgh and Cleveland for their AFC North games. The same way they did in 2007.

In 2012, the Seahawks hosted New England and the Jets, but traveled to Miami and Buffalo. Just like in 2008.

Now, I'm not saying that the league is specifically targeting the Seahawks, because that smacks of stupid conspiracy theory. And clearly, these AFC teams are being affected by this scheduling, too (don't you think Jacksonville would prefer to NOT travel to Seattle every time the two teams play?).

But this does have me wondering if the league's schedulemakers are doing their due diligence when putting the schedule together. The specific dates are sure to be difficult, but the home/away splits should be very easy, as there is a clear pattern that can be followed. And it just seems that the powers that be aren't sticking to that pattern.

Hmmm, I was unaware that part of the reason was to get all 32 teams in the stadium. I though it was just so that your team plays all 32 teams. If this is true though, it does seem quite strange.

We have somehow managed to play @carolina 3 years in a row. Almost starting to feel like a division opponent. No way we play them next year tho.

They dont want the east coast teams to have to travel out west in back to back weeks or something like that.

It is a bias.

Tell that to Jacksonville. Back to back trips to Oakland and Seattle. That really, really sucks for them.

Not quite, but close….

This from Bleacher Reports on the nuances of scheduling…

Beginning in 2010, a change was made to how teams are paired in the schedule rotation to ensure that teams playing the AFC and NFC West divisions would not be required to make two west coast trips (e.g. at San Francisco and at Seattle), while other teams in their division had none (e.g. at St. Louis and at Arizona). The pairings of teams are listed in the digital version of the 2011 NFL Record and Fact Book.

They reset the schedule when they amped up the East Coast bias with the whole no traveling out to the West 4 times. (No NFC West/AFC West pairings anymore.)

It is weird that in light of the 2010 east coast bias, they still make jax have back 2 back west coast games. Must only be for popular teams.

To be fair their '49er game is in London and they ARE the home team if it makes any differance....

Poor East Coast teams. Can't handle traveling out to the West Coast to play more than a couple of times. Don't the West Coast teams have to travel East many more times than that every single year.

There are years where an East Coast team doesn't go west of Chicago or Dallas for the whole season.

Although I am not a fan of Bleacher report, they are correct. The original plan went away during the last cycle for the West conferences as they adjusted schedules so teams didn't have to travel to the two furthest west teams from the AFC or NFC West in the same year. This means that every team that plays in San Francisco from the East, we play away and the opposite is true. This new cycle will again get teams to cycle through all the stadiums, just the rotation got reset when they started this new scheduling policy.

Corrected.
