Chase Young is overrated.

He has 6.5 sacks since the end of 2020 and is a perennial underachiever. His reputation is built on his draft slot and his prototypical build.

In reality, he has been largely a bust, and is a reclamation project.

This does not make the Leonard Williams trade look worse. Leonard has built a productive career, and continues to be productive. Young... well, 1.5 sacks over 2021 and 2022 combined? With THOSE teammates?

He's overrated. He's massively overrated.

We're talking 14 sacks. In his CAREER. This is his FOURTH SEASON.

The saddest part of this is the 49ers only gave up a comp 3rd round pick, some would say that is a 4th. Also if they don't resign/extend him, they will likely get back a 3rd round comp pick for him. This is definitely looking like a $500k rental.

Williams has fewer than seven sacks in 7 of his last 8 seasons, and just 10.5 over the past three combined.

We invested a 2nd and a 5th, will also get a com 3rd if we don't resign Williams. But Williams is a 300 pounder that can play all positions on OL, Young is a 265 pounder, do you really want to try him at nose?

The problem with this thinking is he has hardly played the last 2 years. He is right at the 2 year mark now after tearing his ACL, about the time players get back to normal.

He is a scary player when healthy and coming off the edge opposite Bosa will be a nightmare for most teams. Teams need great tackle play and/or TE blocking as well.

Same amount, but Mafe doesn't have the same level of injury concern, and is under team control for significantly longer.

Chase has tremendously underachieved, and I don't think the 49ers acquiring him makes the Seahawks trade for a perennially good to great inside-out defender look any worse like seems to be a common refrain in the sports media right now

My statement wasn't a comparison to our deal, I still think we were able to get a great deal for Williams, it was more of a 49ers luck statement.

What is telling about Young is that the Commanders passed on his 5th year 2024 option of $17.5M.

If he were healthy and producing, it should have been a no-brainer for the #2 overall draft pick in 2020.

We need more beef in the DL. Especially when the team really wants to be predominantly in the nickel. In order for a 3 3 5 to work you need to be really solid with the 3 DL

I'm told frequently on here that declining an option doesn't matter in regards to Jordyn Brooks.

The Hawks just did a hell of a job slowing down the best D Lineman in football. Niners adding Chase doesn't magically make them SB bound.
That team has plenty of issues for being so perfect and amazing. They just lost 3 in a row. FAR from an unbeatable force that the Media and many fans make them out to be. They are a hell of a football team, but not unstoppable.

Makes our trade for Williams for a 2nd and a 5th look not as good. Chase for a 3rd rounder? Crazy. The Commanders' FO doesn't know what it's doing.
I don't see how. The extra pick was so the Giants covered Williams salary. They are also 2 different style players, Williams can help shore up the interior.
