Rams GM Les Snead explains the 'Bobby Wagner Rule' in the draft

Few general managers in the NFL tend to trade draft picks as much as Les Snead of the Rams does. Although he only made one deal during this year’s draft, he’s moved picks frequently in recent years, even going all the way back to his first year as the Rams’ general manager in 2012.

That year, Snead made one of his biggest trade mistakes as a GM. He traded away from linebacker Bobby Wagner, who the Rams really liked in the 2012 draft as an underrated linebacker.

The Rams moved down from No. 45 to 50 in a trade with the Bears, who moved up to select Alshon Jeffery. At No. 47 overall, the Seahawks swooped in and took Wagner, three spots ahead of the Rams.

They knew Wagner was a good player, but they probably didn’t realize just how successful he’d be in the NFL – which makes that trade sting even more for the Rams.he Rams really liked in the 2012 draft as an underrated linebacker.

Just like every team that was waiting on the 5th round to get Wilson or 3rd round to get DK Metcalf. Schneider seems to have a good idea where he can get guys. Of course if you asked him honestly, he'd likely say there were guys that got nabbed before he was hoping to draft them too.

I kind of feel like we did the same thing with Montrez Sweat. Obviously not as big a miss as the Rams with Wagner though. Imagine him playing behind Aaron Donald; would have obliterated this division.

Taking Russ in the 3rd was Pete, not John. John wanted Russ in the 2nd. Pete felt Bobby was more likely to be gone in the 3rd than Russ, so they drafted him first. It was DEFINITELY the right call.

Wasn't this the second year in a row, the Seahawks got killed by the "experts" for their draft selections?
