Is there a reason they could not try Graham out as a WR?

Its much better to use him as a safety valve standing in the backfield so he can use his amazing shiftiness and speed to make people miss and gain yards.... Oh wait Bevell is the only person dumb enough to think that would actually be a good use of his talent.
He ventured into the backfield to bail out a backpedaling Russ under duress. With hindsight being 20/20 he probably should have just knocked those passes down, but he tried to make something happen. For the record, there were only a couple of those.

Then he'd want to restructure for WR money.

And wasn't there a big issue with that when he was in NO? I think that was part of his issue with them dealing him to us. Using him as a WR but wanting to pay him TE money.

I was being a wise ass but yes, it was a big deal for him @ the Saints.
He argued for WR $, they only wanted to for a TE.
IIRC, it went to court or arbitration but I could be mistaken.

It should never happen with Jimmy Graham because he shouldn't be hanging back blocking. It's year 3 on the team, he can't block, its obviously destroying his mojo out there. Get him out in some space, when the pressure breaks down throw him a high ball even if he is covered he's freaking 6'7 and earned his 10 million a year catching passes. It's not rocket science.

On those particular plays, he was the hot read. Originally designed to be 5-6 yard gainers, he came back to a pressured Russ to see if he could bail him out. The end results were no or minimal gain. But he's been running more routes than that. He was waylayed on Sunday on a catch that would have been a nice gainer. Against the Pack, he was targeted twice in the end zone and at least another time on what would have been a chain-moving catch.
Bottom line is it's just Game 3. He's still going to be a major part of our offense.

I would like to see more two TE sets, but with Willson on the line blocking and Graham lined up outside or in the slot.

That solves the blocking problem and not being in a predictable formation.

Mike Williams was 6'5 245lb and he played decently well in this offense. Jimmy could fill a role like that, at least part time.

Pete is tremendous at adapting the defense to the strengths of the personnel. Just look at Chancellor. With the offense, he's not as adept. I just don't see the logic underpinning the construction nor game plan of that unit.

And you won't. Graham just like Harvin (who Pete learned little from) is the shiny red sports car that everyone loves on a sunny Sunday that never gets driven.

Why was Graham a WR much of his time at NO? Because he couldn't block #1!! What do we do with him? 90% try to make him a blocker. Don't bother putting him at WR here either because he gets too little separation, and Wilson has been drilled to not take risks like that for too long now.

Martellus Bennett has been available a couple of times to us now for far less $$, yet they pass on him (and he is ideal for our scheme here much like Miller only better).

But no....we have to have the shinny red car that effectively is useless but looks cool.

Graham cost us 2 GOOD olinemen if we use that 1st on a tackle, we now have a crap oline and make him a blocker to help the sutuation he created??? Stupid moves like this are killing our shots at a trophy.

We do split Graham out wide...............look, there he is..............out wide.

If you're talking about like, full time? Then no, that doesn't work. There's no such thing as a 6'7" 270 lb WR, too slow and Graham's terrible at running most WR routes. Crisp precise route running is not his strong suit, which you need from a split end WR.

He prefers to slowly lumber and meander out into his routes as to give the defense plenty of time to bracket him. That's his jam.

Truth

Agree - during the Packer game I remember thinking the Packers and Seahawks should switch TE.

We're obviously not retaining him after this year, so we might as well use him as a WR, which is how he WANTS to be used.

He wanted to be considered a WR in NO when he was renegotiating a contract and his argument was that he was split out as a WR more than he was in as a TE, which was true.

Last year he was actually doing pretty well blocking. This year, it looks like he doesn't want anything to do with it.

Either trade his ass or quit fighting him on it. Split him out, let him get his stats, then he'll get a big contract in FA and we'll get a 3rd round comp pick. Plus we get production. Win/Win.
