I heard 171 mil guaranteed. Dayum. Good for him. Get that $ when you can.
Somewhere, Lamar Jackson is losing his sh** right now.
That’s total guarantees which includes roster bonuses + escalators. $110 million fully guaranteed at signing and $126.6 million by March 2024.

The Ravens are the AFC team I follow I am more interested on the Ravens fan base and their reaction a lot of the pro Lamar side are getting fed up with him. There’s a report out that he told the Ravens to acquire both OBJ and D Hop and then we can talk. If true I would have told him to pound sand

Good chunk of change. As usual the original story is likely off from the actual value. Schefter did say 179 guaranteed.
Either way, kid got paid$$$$$

The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts have reached agreement on a five-year, $255 million extension, including $179.304 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

I think the Eagles are in danger of taking a step back this year. They've lost so many players in free agency (Hargrave, Gardner-Johnson, Miles Sanders, Kyzir White, TJ Edwards) and their stars are aging (Brandon Graham 35, Jason Kelce 35, Lane Johnson 32, Fletcher Cox 32, Darius Slay 32). They do have a lot of draft capital, so they will be able to reload, but maintaining the same level of success as 2022 (14-3) might be a tough task.

So this is just the deal now, win Superb Owls on Rookie contracts, then mire the team in salary cap hell and mediocrity until your next QB? Seems kinda a shit way to keep "parity" in the league.
The Chiefs just won a super bowl with a QB that has a massive contract.

Yah…just wait until Burrow and Herbert pop up.

Philly may have saved themselves some loot.., as hard as that is to believe.

I've been saying, since Wentz and Goff were drafted, that the first team to get off the crazy train of paying 10% plus of salary cap to the QB, will be the next team with a shot of repeating the Patriots' legacy.

Draft a good one. Keep your combined cap hit for the QB and left tackle at around 10% to 12% of the cap. Use your remaining cap space to build a contender around them. Trade your QB in his 3rd or 4th year, and draft another one. If you can't get your guy right away, trade your stars for picks. Don't get caught up in the cash over cap game. Go through a couple years of sucking, if need be, until you hit on the next rookie starter. Then build another contender around him. You could probably get a ring every 4 to 6 years doing this.

The Eagles likely still have another year left in their window. They're pushing a lot of cap into the future, and a contract like this is going to be very heavily backloaded.

For example, Mahomes signed his extension in 2020 and it's not until next season in year 5 that the cap hit increases above $40m for the first time.

Rough spot to be in. You let them walk, you’re back to the drawing board unless you have a Geno Smith in your back pocket.

You overpay and don’t get the production…well, you just suck (see Denver for reference).

Exactly, that's how it has always been at QB. The next guy up is gonna' get his, and likely a little more than the highest paid guy.

True, but they built that team while Mahomes was taking up miniscule cap space. 2022 was his first year of a big cap hit, when the team elected not to roll his roster bonus into another signing bonus, like they did in 2021. They elected to take another big hit this year.

However, due to the nature of the roster bonus to signing bonus mechanism, they aren't tied to the typical "cap hit goes up every year" feature of most QB contracts. By rolling roster bonuses into signing bonuses, they can drop the cap hit, in any given year of the contract. Eventually, they will have to pay the piper, but if they can get a few rings out of it, that will prove to be another mechanism for building a dynasty.

2020 - 2.42%
2021 - 3.94%
2022 - 18.51%
2023 - 18.77%
2024 - ???

If Jalen Hurts falls off, then the Eagles are in huge trouble. They have taken an enormous risk. Plus this will make it harder to re-sign some of their players- like Jordan Davis, etc.

Unfortunately, they also created problems for the rest of the league regarding positional value for QBs and contracts.

Mahomes cap hit was 35.8m in 2022 and his OTC valuation was 47.8m. Using that math, they were +12m in surplus talent last season due to that contract and that significant source of value is one of the reasons they won the Super Bowl.

Of course it's much easier to gain surplus talent on a QB contract if they are on a rookie deal. Hurts had a valuation of $38.3m last season with a cap hit of $1.6m for a team surplus of $36.7 million.

It would be funny AF if Hurts went back to previous Jalen Hurts now that he has that insane contract. And can the media be any further up Howie Roseman's ass? Their fans were ready to run him out of town prior to last season.
