If they make the IR move on Simon, I'm very curious how Smith may fare. A big power back could complement our short yardage package quite nicely while Lynch is out.

Can't they just sign RB Rod Smith while Jackson is out, then return him to the parctice squad when Jackson returns?

You would need to cut a player on the 53 in order to sign Smith to the active roster. To get him back to the PS you would need to waive him and hope no one signs him.
