I've always like DVOA but as I learn more about it, I begin to realize how pointless a lot of the "common" stats are. Here's a good example of what stat pointing can do for you. Kaepernick had a higher QBR with 0 passing tds than Manning with 7. I know QBR is a bad stat but most stats don't count for everything.
Just looking at the eye test and the players on each team, the Saints aren't close to the Hawks on defense, stats be damned. And well what do you know? DVOA shows they aren't close. Things like how much their offense benefits their defense by forcing teams to abandon the run will artificially boost their run defense just aren't commonly accounted for. There are just a ton of things that go in to how good a team is at anything and checking the stat sheet on NFL.com just doesn't show it.
