Seems like it's a bit redundant. Particularly given how we'll have that many second contracts tied up at DE.
Not redundant at all. Unlike Avril and Schofield, Sheard would represent a legitimate run defender in the base D, which the Hawks desperately need at the Leo position. Asking Avril to play in both base and pass rush sets not only hurt the D in the running game, but compromised Avril's pass rushing due to having to play on so many downs. The same could be said - to a lesser degree - about Michael Bennett on the other side. Guys like Avril and Bennett need to be on pitch counts to maximize their effectiveness, but doing so first requires the necessary assets to complement them. Allowing Sheard to own the Leo spot in the base D while preserving Avril for mostly pass rushing duties upgrades the Hawks in BOTH defensive sets. And Sheard is a pretty darn good pass-rusher in his own right, which you can never have enough of. If the Hawks can get Sheard at a modest rate, it would be one of the steals of free agency in the entire league, based on need, fit, age and price.

This is one that I've been waiting for and it is very smart.

And this feels very Schneider. He has talked about waves of free agency, and when someone as good as Sheard doesn't get scooped up in that first wave, this is when he has tended to pounce on market inefficiencies. Sheard is a much better player than Kruger and Mingo - two guys that have eaten up a lot of his edge rushing opportunities.

Sheard would be a good fit. He's not as fast as Avril, but his skillset is very similar. Unfortunately, Sheard is scheme diverse which means that both 3-4 and 4-3 teams will covet him. There could be a bit of a bidding war.

He's only 25 years old, still young and still in the formative phase of his career.

is the pursuit of Sheard pretty much over with the Jimmy Graham trade?

Don't see any reason why those two things are related.

I believe his first visit was to NE but I don't know what the outcome was (have not seen anything indicated he signed).

If they can add some DL and an interior OL In FA, I will be very happy.

Cap purposes.

Cap is not an issue for us right now.

Moot.

Good signing by the Pats. Probably just a bit too rich for Seattle as a #3 pass rusher.

Wonder if this played a part in Seattle not pursuing him too hard:
