We all know the Seahawks are notoriously slow and measured when they jump in to the FA market. Let the market setting signings pass and then find out what bargains are left over.

I'm wondering how much of a factor comp picks are also playing a part. If the Seahawks wait until after the draft to sign players they won't count against the comp pick formula. This would especially matter for higher priced players whose singings could negate comp picks they'd get for players like Griffin, Carson, and maybe KJ and Pocic.

If that's the case it makes sense to only sign low cost players now, and wait until after the draft to sign the higher priced players.

Note that players who are cut by other teams don't count against the comp pick formula, nor do a team's own free agents. So if Rodney Hudson had indeed been released, we could have signed him without a comp pick penalty.

It sure seems that the FA strategy this year is focused around preserving comp picks. There could be more players getting released today - that might get the Seahawks moving on some signings.

Doesn't matter if you sign low $$ players or high $$ players. Even if you sign 3 vet minimum players, it affects comp a lot.

The FO plan is to sign players, that are essential to the team but they don't want to overpay.
Just look at last season, Brandon Shell, Cedric Ogbuehi, Phillip Dorset, Benson Mayowa, Chance Warmack, B.J Finney.

Tend to disagree, the only thing that they will gain from Shaquill, is probably a 4th or a 5th round draft pick at best.

Also would like to add that because the salary cap dropped, many teams are more hesitant to dish out money on players that are old and injured often.

Just look at Suh and Carson for example. Suh would make 7-8 mill for 1 year rental, but it's more likely a 4-5 mill deal.

As for Carson, he would command at least 10mill a year, but is probably looking at 6mill a year.

You better tell the Lions, Cards, Jags , 49ers, that.

You got Jags twice, but did you see their Salary Cap?

Also the Cards are in a win now mode. They have better pieces than the Hawks at this moment in most positions.

Shaquill's deal is just above the third round pick compensatory threshold from last season. If spending is slightly less due to the restricted cap then it should net a 3rd round pick this off-season but we won't know until after the compensatory deadline.

What matters first is the net change in UFA, and then picks are awarded based on tier of UFA contract for teams that end up in the red. The Seahawks had 21 total UFAs and so there's a good chance that we can sign a couple of qualifying UFAs now without jeopardizing our picks, but it is a small gamble.

It's very important for the successful teams to seek any (legal) advantage they can because the NFL is structured to curb them in every way possible. The most successful teams should be seeking comp picks because they will have players in house worth spending money on. In my view the Hawks have not focused on this nearly enough and have neglected the long-term picture in favor of overly focusing on each upcoming season.

I don't blame the Cards or Chiefs for going into win now mode while they are still getting massive value from a dirt cheap QB. However, if neither wins the Super Bowl in this window it will backfire as fans turn on them in a few years once the backloaded contracts kick in alongside the big QB cap hits and their rosters suffer as a result.

He has the 6th highest APY so far of the UFAs at $13.3m/yr, which is currently a 4th round pick according to OTC ($14m cutoff). However, free agency just started and it depends on extensions and restructures throughout this spring; several of those numbers ahead of Griffin should be lowered as teams look for cap room.
