Okung and Comp Picks

  • Over the cap had an interesting write up of projected comp picks.

    http://overthecap.com/projecting-2017-compensatory-draft-picks/

While Irvin (3rd) and Sweezy (5th) seem straight forward, Okung could be anywhere from a 3rd to a 6th based on how the league values his contract which was $5.2M in the first year, with a 4-year option at $12M/per.

That's a big swing in a year we're down picks. Hopefully things break our way.

Fun fact: There is a scenario where the Broncos could decline his option, and we get a pick for and resign him to a prove-it deal a la Christine Michael. I doubt we'd pay him what some other team would, but he would be a nice mentor for Fant.

  • Would we consider giving him a 1 or 2 year incentive laden deal.....

I figure Denver will resign him though.

  • To be clear on this question though, Okung would not result in an extra pick. Basically if his valuation is considered higher due to bonuses received -- his pick would replace that for Sweezy. We lost 4 qualifying UFAs and signed 2. So the most number of comp picks we'll be awarded is only 2.

This was a huge boner by Schneider in my opinion this past season. Webb and Sowell were just garbage. Webb in particular. We essentially cut him the week after the deadline for which we could have recouped a comp pick. So we signed him for guaranteed money (dead money) AND basically traded a 6th round pick to have him for 11 weeks.

And to make matters worse, instead of cutting him to get the pick back on that final week, we had him as a healthy inactive.

That Webb deal was just terrible from the outset.

  • Looking at the article, it doesn't actually seem possible to get an "Extra" pick for Okung. What they are saying is that if the committee values Okung's contract at the entirety of the contract then we would swap the 5th round pick we are getting from Sweezy for a 3rd rounder from Okung instead.

Basically it brakes down like this:

We lost 4 UFA's in the offseason - Irvin, Sweezy, Mebane, and Okung
We signed 2 qualifying UFA's - J'Marcus Webb and Bradley Sowell

Those two UFA's we signed will eliminate the two lowest compensetory picks we would have recieved so...

If we would have gotten a 3 for Irvin, 5 for Sweezy, 6 for Mebane, and 6 for Okung (based on 1 year deal) Then the two 6th round picks would be wiped out by the signings of Webb and Sowell (Seahawks end up with a 3rd and 5th comp pick)

But if we would have gotten a 3 for Irvin, 3 for Okung (full contract), 5 for Sweezy, and 6 for Mebane Then the 5th and 6th round picks would be wiped out by the signings of Webb and Sowell. (Seahawks end up with two 3rd round comp picks)

Either way we are only getting 2 total compensatory picks because we lost 4 qualifying players and signed 2. The only way that changes is if somehow Sowell or Webb are found to not count towards compensatory picks. However, nothing I've seen suggests that either of them would not qualify. The Webb signing actually hurts us even more if Okung's entire contract is taken into account and we're awarded a 3rd for him because that would essentially mean we lost the 5th from Sweezy for the opportunity to sign Webb just to cut him too late to recoup the pick. We could have possibly had two extra 3rd's and a 5th...

  • Yeah, Webb was definitely a blunder in hindsight.

We probably shouldn't get a 3rd for Okung given what a fake contract that was, but maybe we'll get lucky and they'll forget to release him before the upcoming deadline.
