I've been wanting to discuss this ever since the playoffs began. Since we now are NFC champs. Which team is the best in team history? 2005 or 2013. Because the 2013 team has accomplished everything the 2005 squad did. Obviously if we win in 2 weeks this discussion becomes moot.

So I ask you which is the best?

Both teams finished 13-3, Both teams claimed the #1 seed. Both teams won 2 home playoff games en route to the Super Bowl.
Point differential:
2005- 181- 11.3 / game
2013- 186- 11.6/ game

Turnover differential:
2005- +10
2013- +20

Hasslebeck- 3459 yards, 65.5% comp %, 24-TD, 9-INT, 7.7 Yards/Att. RATING = 98.2
Wilson- 3357 yards, 63.1% comp %, 26-TD, 9- INT, 8.2 Yards/Att, RATING = 101.2

Team Rushing
2005- 2457 yards, 29 TD's, 4.7- Avg, 153.6 yards/gm
2013- 2188 yards, 14 TD's, 4.3- Avg, 136.8 yards/gm

How do you see it?
I'm going with 2013, mainly because I believe the 2013 team has had to go through tougher competition to get there.
1) I believe that the 2013 playoffs were offered a much tougher task than what Seattle faced in 2005. In 2005 they faced Mark Brunell for the Redskins (who was a good journeymen QB but never a great one), and the streaky Jake Delhomme in CAR in the championship game. Remember their RB's were decimated in that game and there backup RB got knocked out of the game in the first half after colliding with Tatupu.

Meanwhile in 2013 you faced a hall of famer in Drew Brees and Kaepernick who has tremendous physical abilities along with a unbeleiveable defense. So 2013's playoff opponents were far and away better than what we faced in 2005.

2) The NFC West was SIGNFICANTLY better in 2013 than in 2005. Seattle never was challenged by it's NFC west counterpart. (Basically it was like what the AFC East has been for nearly a decade) 1 great team and a bunch of average squads at best. So for the fact that the road was much tougher for the 2013 squad. I'd say they are the best team in Seahawks history.

2013. Feels like we played much tougher opponents this year.

Carolina, SF 3 times! NO twice, AZ twice.

Without a doubt this year has been tougher.

This is a very good point. NFCW was a mess outside of us in '05 IIRC. Better defense this year. '13 easily for me.

This is a very good question, no doubt the defense this year is better but I keep thinking back to the running game and the complete control our offensive line had on the everyone else. running back that misses the rushing title by one yard and breaks the rushing TD record was amazing, the West Coast offense of 5 yard throws done by precision was excellent.

I really don't know how to pick one over the other at this point, I love watching both teams. When the 2013 Hawks win the Superbowl then it will become an easy pick imo.

For me, I think the 2013 squad is better. That being said, nothing can match the feeling of winning that first NFC Championship. It was uncharted territory for us. Therefore I hold both seasons in equal regard.

Now, if we WIN this time....

I think the 2013 Seahawks are mentally tougher than the 2005 squad.

This year, hands down. Best part is we had the youngest team in the playoffs.

I agree with a lot of what has been said here:

tougher competition this year, 2013 squad is mentally tougher, defense is better this year (offense was better in 2005).

My answer: we'll see. If we lose the SB this year, it makes both teams equal, all things considered.

This year. The swag and confidence is on a totally different level. In my opinion....A bit based I admit...This is the best defense ever assembled in the league.

Not a chance in the world that the 2005 Seahawks were as good as the 2007 Patriots, for instance. Landing in the same place at the end of the season doesn't make two teams the same.

2013 squad is better regardless of what happens in 12 days.

He won the rushing title in 2005 with 1,880 (Tiki Barber was second with 1,860). He was one yard short in 2004.

You've kind of pointed out that the offenses are basically even...now on to the defenses, let me sum up the stats for you:

2005: 1
2013: 172,323,423,434

I prefer this offense to the 2005 one. Because the 2013 offense doesn't shut down when something goes wrong.

I don't think the 05 offense could've beat the Niners last Sunday.

2013 is better on almost every level. Maybe not O-Line and our passing game clicked better, but I would even take our running game this year over our running game that year. Lynch runs with a determination that outshines Alexander (Who I still really like and appreciate) by a mile.

As an aside, which team is better: the 2005 Steelers or the 2013 Broncos?

Well they now have both reached the same level of success at this point, so I would give the edge to 2013 based on the Defense and the strength of our schedule.

I wasn't willing to anoint them the better team until they proved they could reach the Super Bowl like the 2005 team. But they did that.

Actually Alexander DID get the rushing title in 2005, he missed out on that title the year before in 2004 to Curtis Martin.
