Russell may support Hackett's decision to kick the FG in public like the good little soldier he wants everyone to think that he is, but you can bet your bottom dollar that deep down inside, he's burning up about it.
Wilson and Hackett are supposedly "partners," not coach and player, and if Wilson wanted to go for it, he could have:
  • run the play that was sent in from the sideline on 4th and 5, instead of leaving his teammates waiting for him to call the signal to start the play, chickening out and letting the clock run out, forcing a time out;
  • at least talked to the coach about it during the TWO time outs before the final kick, which he also didn't do.
Wilson didn't want to risk being involved in the Broncos' final play if they lost. He thought it was less of a risk to his brand if they kicked. As we can see, when the kick failed, Wilson wasn't blamed. But you can bet that if the kick had been good, many mediots would have described it as Russell Wilson going back to Seattle and beating his old team, and Wilson would have basked in that.

It's almost as if a new blend of coach, OC, QB, and team could use a game or two to get things in sync before playing in games that count toward the season record. Maybe we could suggest something like that to the NFL.

The decision to hold Russ out of pre-season games is just as befuddling as the decision to go for a field goal at the end of the game. If they had been playing together for several years, then that's a completely different story.

I agree, but Russell/Denver were not alone in that regard. Marcus Mariota, the Falcons new QB, did not take a snap in the preseason, either. There were others that played just one series.

Sitting starters for the entire preseason seemed to be a common practice this year. It used to be that teams would give all their starters at least one series in each of their first two preseason games, work them a full half in the 3rd, then sit them in the 4th game.

Clock issues and getting plays set was an issue with Russ for all of time here.
Stop trying to to John3 it up.

Re-read my post, and ask yourself who is responsible for the decision to hold Russ out of the preseason.

Hint, "Partners."

If you think I am John3-ing it, well, you don't know me very well.

Starting QBs who missed the preseason went 3-8 in week 1, maybe they should reconsider that idea.

I would suggest that some pre-season action would be even more important for a QB who has had game flow problems with his prior team, and is playing with a new line, OC, coach, receivers etc.

Even if the final say was not his, Russ should have demanded some pre-season time, to get in sync with the new team. Of course, that would require some self knowledge and reflection.
