Kind of a bummer we never got an opportunity to see this guy showcase his skillset during the season, particularly when we've been short handed at the position on occasion. I can't help but think he struggled to learn the playbook as the (raw) talent was there.

The poaching couldn’t have happened at a worse time given that Lockett is not back and we lost diss.

Well he didn't get a call up and even Treadwell got up here so maybe that says something..
Yeah, Treadwell was my No. 1 ranked WR in his draft, but him getting the call-up first probably signals Melton wasn't showing enough in practices.

Especially since Treadwell was here for what, like a week so far? Yikes

I had pretty high hopes for Melton, and was thinking maybe he needs a year or two to get acclimated. Would be very disappointing to see him go off in Green Bay knowing we could've kept him.

Don't teams get notified before someone poaches a player off of the practice squad in order to elevate them and prevent it before it happens? Or do I not remember correctly?

Disappointing! Treadwell is a rough route runner and a blah player.

Melton is in a better spot for his career, but dang, why this coaching staff won’t try young guys when the regular stiffs are underwhelming is frustrating. Good luck kid.

From pats pulpit…

The NFL allows practice squad players to be signed by other teams, but there are some rules governing the process:

  • Players cannot be signed directly from one practice squad to another. They either have to be released first or added to the active 53-man team.
  • Practice squad players are not allowed to sign with upcoming opponents, unless done so a minimum of six days before the two teams’ game (10 if the team is on a bye).
  • If a practice squad player is signed by another team, he receives a guaranteed three-week salary and will count against the 53-man roster for at least three weeks — even if released before those three weeks are over.

Thanks SCH! I hope we can get him back in some capacity before the start of next season. I'd hate to see him wearing green and gold long-term

Practice Squad players are free agents. They're paid up to $10K per week with no guarantees. Being paid on the PS means the player can't leave to join another PS and he can't sign for his current team's next opponent with 6 or less days to go before the game. Other than that nobody owes anyone anything. It's a mercenary business, which aids parity and keeps the NFL competitive.

Anyone know if practice squad anti poaching is still in effect?

Outside of the Draft the NFL mandates that teams sign rookies to a 3 year contract. That contract remains in place until the player is released or the contract expires. The Packers are unlikely to release Melton before the end of the season, in which case he will be on their 90-man off-season roster going into 2023.

Will be interesting to see how it works out for Melton. I remember a certain UW Receiver being released and people freaked out like they were letting go of a HOF player. He did literally nothing in the NFL. Hope we can get Melton back at some point, but time will tell.

I believe the rule was amended in 2022 to allow teams to protect 1 player, (as was the case before the pandemic). Players can negotiate non-protection PS clauses with teams. Multi-year veterans would be unwilling to sign PS terms with a team if they thought the team would effectively block them from moving on.

I hate this. I wish they'd have signed him and didn't bother mucking about with Treadwell.

Re-Treadwell doesn’t look like he will make a lasting impact.
