So, sign Geno that we can take a QB at 5? Great collateral damage plan (Geno goes back to being the other Geno…it’s ok because we have his replacement). But, this seems unrealistic to me.

If they’ve got a guy they like, after stacking the D, maybe.

Nonetheless, it’s nice to know we have a QB!!

They aren't drafting a QB in the first 3 rounds. An absolute waste of a pick.
Not really. Geno Smith is on the wrong side of 30 and has a history of not performing in crunch time dating back all the way to college. Smith also regressed quite a bit near the end of the season. His last five games in particular were brutal.

Geno Smith is nothing but a placeholder for us.

We're in a position in which we can pick up a potentially elite passer. As Pete himself said "this is a rare opportunity". Seattle is never winning or competing for a SuperBowl with Geno Smith under center.

A bit more money than I had hoped we'd pay him but all things considered I'm happy with this news and arrangement. If it was left up to me, I'd trade our #20 to Houston (?) for their 2nd this year and their 1st next year. In 2024 I'd use their first on Maye, throwing in our own first if necessary. I think Maye could probably find success in his rookie year but sitting him behind Geno for a year, IMO, would assure his long-term success and possibly give us our best QB in franchise history.

Can't wait until 3 years...no more Pete and Geno. Going to be stuck being mediocre.

Y'all were complaining about 30million and now happy with this contract.

I’d trade the 5th pick. It’s hard to say without seeing what’s on the board but I highly doubt we’re looking at a first round QB now.

There’s a few teams that may give up the farm that slot.

The first year of the contract is with INCENTIVES added that COULD earn him $52M.

Our FO is a lot more porous than I would have been. But I'm glad it's done so now we can go into the draft with a clean mind. Not sure about where we'll be with the cap. I'd think we would have learned something from the Wilson contract.

well they can't just do this and nothing else in FA. they have to address the front 7 before the draft... right? and he's not a FA but i hope they can pry deforest buckner away from the colts. he'd be a monster 3-4 DE for us. maybe too costly now. idk
Hargrove from Philly would work for me. I wanted Payne but he got tagged.

Can't see that being the Number 5 pick, we have too many needs to invest both a ton of $ and a ton of draft capital at QB. If he really wanted one of the top 4 QBs but didn't think they would be ready for next season Geno would get tagged and his man would have a year to learn (barring injury to Geno).
If John has spotted a rough diamond that needs two years to shine he will want to select him on day 2 or even 3 of the draft.
They couldn’t afford a $32+ mil cap hit to franchise him. It wasn’t a realistic option

I like it also. They've rewarded Geno for a heck of a year but also protected the team. This is NOT the Hawks pulling a Denver and giving a 33 year old QB a 5 year $243 million contract.

I just saw Brian Baldinger say no way the Hawks take a QB at #5 now. It does seem like the AR15 fantasies have taken a major blow. It would be the ultimate okie doke if we still selected him.

Note that these numbers are showing maximum savings if we fully backload the contracts and we're never that reckless. Restructuring Adams and extending Lockett in particular are questionable moves because their escalating cap hits are already going to be uncomfortably high next year.

Extending Nwosu does makes sense, and we could also get some more money without sabotaging our future too much by extending Brooks, Lewis and/or Harris.

Cutting Gabe and QJeff is easy but I think we keep Woods. 3.7m savings for cutting our only good 1T doesn't sound like a great idea with how serious Mone's injury turned out to be.

"Late round" QB prospects sign 1 year backup contracts then leave the league. It's so frustrating hearing this, because the reality is, late round QBs amounting to anything is about the same odds as being struck by lightening. No, there's no value in late round QBs.
Yea Tom Brady in the 6th round was such a 1 year bust

Or take Hooker later, let him rehab and learn under Geno for a year or two.
