Well if history repeats, we should be there in only 68 years.

The Mariners acquired veteran catcher Carlos Ruiz in a trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to multiple sources, although there was no immediate confirmation from either club.

News of the trade broke Sunday night in a twitter post by Jon Heyman of http://www.fanragsports.com. A subsequent twitter report by Joel Sherman of MLB Network said the Mariners are surrendering a pitcher from their 40-man roster.

The Dodgers currently hold a $4.5 million option on Ruiz, 37, with a $500,000 buyout. The Mariners will pick up that option.

Ruiz is an 11-year veteran who spent his entire career with Philadelphia before an Aug. 25 trade sent him to the Dodgers as part of a multi-player deal. He batted a combined .264 this season with three homers and 15 RBIs in 62 games.

Such a move positions Ruiz to replace Chris Iannetta as the backup to Mike Zunino. Iannetta became a free agent last Thursday when the Mariners chose not to exercise a $4.5 million option for 2017.

I said it before and I'll say it again.

Giphy
I prefer the image of Will Farrell in old school after he shoots himself in the neck with the tranquilizer gun and then falls into the pool.

Not a fan of this move by Dipoto. He seems to think good lefty relievers are a dime a dozen. Montgomery became a stud for the Cubs and now very effective Nuno is gone.

Ruiz' best is long behind him. They obviously need help at C but at 38 and hitting in Safeco just screams a .230 year for him. Many more moves to follow this winter though.

This seems like a good trade.A doubleA pitcher for a guy who hits decent and has power but he is a bat against Lh pitching. He can play multi positions so there is that.

The Diamondbacks have acquired right-hander Taijuan Walker as part of a five-player trade that saw veteran shortstop Jean Segura shipped to the Mariners.

Arizona also acquired infielder Ketel Marte from Seattle as part of the deal, with outfielder Mitch Haniger and left-hander Zac Curtis going to the Mariners

Oh, wow. Aside from shocked, I'm not quite sure how to feel.

Former first-round pick Alex Jackson, an outfielder who began the last two seasons as the top-rated prospect in the Mariners’ organization, is heading elsewhere.

The Mariners continued a busy off-season Monday night by trading Jackson, the sixth overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, and a player to be named later to the Atlanta Braves for two right-handed pitchers: Rob Whalen and Max Povse.

To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Mariners also designated right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber for assignment. Ironically, the Mariners acquired Weber, 26, in a Nov. 2 waiver claim from the Braves,

"This move gives us two young, polished pitchers," general manager Jerry Dipoto said, "who immediately bolster our starting pitching depth, while adding to our roster flexibility."

Dipoto indicated the Mariners intend to continue pursuing depth to their rotation in the wake of last week’s trade that sent right-hander Taijuan Walker to Arizona in a five-player deal that netted shortstop Jean Segura.

Whalen, who turns 23 on Jan. 31, was 1-2 with a 6.57 ERA in five starts last August for the Braves before he was shut down in order to limit his innings.

He spent most of the season in the minors at Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett, where he was a combined 7-5 with a 2.49 ERA in 21 starts. He appears likely to open next season at Triple-A Tacoma.

Povse, 23, was 9-6 with a 3.36 ERA in 26 starts while splitting last season at Mississippi and Hi-A Carolina. He appears likely to start the season at Double-A Arkansas.

While Whalen goes on the 40-man roster, he has three options remaining. Povse is not yet eligible for the Rule 5 Draft as, accordingly, will not be placed on the 40-man roster.

"I like it when you get two 23-year-olds," Dipoto said, "one who has three options and the other who is pretty polished. They’re both set to pitch at the upper level in 2017, and it gives us more depth.

No mention of Segura, (though I may have missed it) the 26 year old SS we got in the Arizona deal. Man, what an upgrade at short!

In his rookie year he hit .319, with 20HR, 33SB, and 64RBI. I like this guy already.
