Those sacks are great, but you cant give up coverage when your getting them. While Adams was busy rushing the QB, the secondary was giving up historical yardage. Even when Adams was back there trying to cover receivers, he was getting toasted by them. As nice as those 9+ sacks looks like on paper, the defense was still horrible until Dunlap was signed and they had a string of creampuffs in the second half. As great as everybody wants Adams to be, he's going to take up resources that will hurt the team for years to come. Brown is the guy they should have been concentrating on. Hes actually vital to the team.
Are we really going to blame the historically horrible pass defense on Jamal?? I put that blame on Norton, who has no idea what defense is! His defensive game planning is literally from Madden play book!. How is it Jamal's fault when Norton has the CBs playing 10 yards off on a 3rd and 1? And then we have Mr. Flowers playing RCB, who gives up catch after catch after catch. Yes Jamal gave up a few coverage completions, but come on! Who doesn't!
You guys are both wrong.
The non-existent pass rush was to blame for this historically bad defense early in the season. We didn't sign a top DE, Irvin went down, Mayowa went down.
Adams wasn't blitzing that much because that's what they wanted him to do, he was blitzing so much because that was the only option they had to get pressure. The coaches have said that won't be happening as much next year. The threat of Adams blitzing will always be there, but the effectiveness of his blitzing will be even better because they won't know it's coming. Coverage should be better as well.
Two things turned the defense around:
1) Signing Carlos Dunlap. All of a sudden we had a pass rush and could play a more sound defense.
2) Norton gave a big, well-publicized speech about accountability to the defense which had an immediate impact of focus and execution.
In the latter part of the year the defense was much better. ALSO, if you look at how the defense played with and without Adams, the stats show that across the board the defense played better with him in the lineup. Imagine how he'll play with a full year of immersion in the scheme, a healthy body, and a less predictable role. He is a legit DPOY candidate.
